In 1918, the National Beijing Academy of Fine Arts, the predecessor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, was founded, [81] Zheng Jin, a famous art educator, served as the first president. This is the first national art education institution in Chinese history and the beginning of modern art education in China. [71] [76]

National Beijing Art School

In 1923, the National Beijing Academy of Fine Arts was renamed the National Beijing Academy of Fine Arts, with three departments of Chinese painting, western painting and pattern. [82] At the beginning of the 20th century, a group of art talents who first studied in Europe, Japan and the United States gathered in art colleges to spread new knowledge and explore art education. The teaching structure of art colleges has taken shape. [83]
Since April 1924, the school tide has continued. Zheng Jin resigned, and the headmaster kept changing. On February 3, 1925, the Executive Yuan closed the school. [59]

National Art School

In 1925, Wen Yiduo, Zhao Taimou, Xiong Foxi and Xiao Youmei, who returned from studying in the United States, opened the Department of Drama and the Department of Music in the National Academy of Fine Arts, which was renamed the National Beijing Art School. [59] [87] The Drama Department of the National Beijing Art School was the beginning of the establishment of the drama major by the state educational institutions in modern Chinese history. The National Beijing Art School is also one of the birthplaces of modern music education in China. When Lin Fengmian was the president of the National Beijing College of Arts, he employed Qi Baishi, Claude and other famous Chinese and foreign experts as professors. [87]

College of Arts, National Peiping University

In November 1927, the national initiative was to implement the "university district" system, and nine universities in Beijing were merged into Beijing Normal University, with the art college as the art department. After the success of the Northern Expedition in 1928, Beijing was renamed as Beiping, and the Department of Fine Arts of Beijing Normal University was renamed the Academy of Arts of National Beiping University. In August 1929, teachers and students objected to the change of the Ministry of Education from a university system to a college system. After several turbulence, it was forced to end by the Ministry of Education in November 1933. [59]

National Peiping Art College

In July 1937, when Peiping fell into the enemy's hands, the principal Zhao Taimou led some teachers and students to the south, and some teaching staff left behind in Peiping took care of the school property at the school's behest. [59] [83]
In 1938, after the July 7th Incident, Beiping fell and the school moved south. Beiping merged with two national art colleges in Hangzhou and was named the National Art College. [84] In September, Teng Gu was officially appointed as the president of the National Academy of Arts. During this period, the National Academy of Arts officially had its own motto, "Boyao Hongyi", and held its first art exhibition. After the National Academy of Arts moved to Kunming, it had its own school song, and the lyricist was Teng Gu, the headmaster. [85]
After the fall of Peiping, the left behind part of the Art College was relocated several times and temporarily stabilized in the East Zongbu Hutong. The National Art College was renamed the National Beijing Art College. [84]
