The "emerging woodcut movement" aroused the social subject consciousness of Chinese printmakers. Since then, printmakers are more accustomed to doing intellectual type thinking. Whether during the "Left Wing Alliance" period or the "Yan'an Luyi" period, the work of printmakers is no longer simply "art for art's sake", but more is to use the social function of printmaking to guide and intervene in the trend of social development. In fact, prints have played a spiritual role in improving their personality and shaping their wisdom and soul. In 1954, the Central Academy of Fine Arts established the first engraving department in China. The teaching staff at the beginning of its establishment was composed of such a group of artists. While they taught professional skills, they also established the academic character of the engraving profession, which focuses on society, respects rationality, and is good at thinking. [1]

Teaching system

In the 1960s, the Printmaking Department implemented a studio system in teaching for a long time, with Li Hua, Gu Yuan, Huang Yongyu and Wang Qi as the chief teachers respectively. The studio system has led to multiple and parallel styles in the teaching of printmaking. Since 1977, the teaching of Printmaking Department has been on the right track again after ten years of interruption of regular teaching. At that time, the Printmaking Department set up a wood engraving studio, a copper engraving studio and a stone engraving studio. In 1981, it took the lead in setting up a screen print studio in China. As a result, lithography, copperplate, screen plate and other marginal types, together with wood plate, can be fully expanded and improved. During this period, the Printmaking Department formed a more scientific teaching system in many aspects, such as education direction, knowledge reserve, re combination of human resources, and improvement of printing technology. The stable and harmonious working atmosphere prompted the teachers to put forward higher requirements for research and their own creation, whether it is the influence of works or the education mode of printmaking, They have become the model of print education in national art colleges and universities, affecting the development of national print. In the mid-1980s, the Printmaking Department also opened an illustration major; In the 1990s, the Printmaking Department set up a traditional printmaking studio and a digital printmaking studio. The establishment of several print studios further enriched the teaching content of the print department.
In order to adapt to the new cultural environment and social needs of the twenty-first century, the Printmaking Department has replaced the original version studio system with the teaching mode of combining the tutor studio and the printmaking technique studio. The original teaching function of each edition studio is divided into two parts, and the technical guidance function is classified as the printmaking technique studio, which is in the charge of full-time technicians. The function of art teaching is transferred to several different tutor studios, who are responsible for teaching students such as modeling laws, art forms of expression, and art concepts.
Although the teaching system, specific teaching contents and methods are different in different stages of the printmaking department, the dominant teaching idea of emphasizing the cultivation of students' solid basic skills and strong creative ability comes down in one continuous line. While guiding students to give full play to their artistic personality, mastering the laws and methods of artistic creation, helping them to establish a correct attitude towards life, and paying attention to the overall improvement of ideological morality and cultural cultivation are the school running principles that the Printmaking Department has always adhered to. Teaching structure

The undergraduate teaching of Printmaking Department actually started from the second grade. The teaching work is mainly composed of three parts, namely, the teaching of professional basic courses for the second grade, the comprehensive art teaching in the tutor's studio, and the technical auxiliary teaching in the printmaking technology studio.
The main teaching content of the second grade is sketch, color, thinking and visual transformation training and spring sketching class. The basic problem solved by the second grade teaching is how to connect the basic modeling training of the college with the printmaking professional teaching that emphasizes creative thinking. Therefore, in the teaching of basic courses for the second grade, while emphasizing that students have a solid foundation in modeling, we should pay attention to cultivating their independence, initiative, interaction and creativity in the process of artistic creation. In short, it is to train students to have a pair of "hands" that can think, so as to lay the foundation for entering the third grade tutor studio.
The teaching stage of the teacher studio is the main part of the undergraduate teaching of the Printmaking Department. Under the guidance of the tutor, students enter the comprehensive learning stage of printmaking materials, techniques and artistic expression language. [1]
