At the end of the Qing Dynasty, with the establishment of manufacturing bureaus, shipping bureaus, textile and paper mills, and the construction and development of coal mines and railways, China's modern industrial system initially emerged.
During the Westernization Movement, under the slogan of "self-improvement" and "seeking wealth", the Qing government began to develop engineering. In China, there were many schools specialized in training engineering and technical talents, such as the Railway and Mining School, the Advanced Industrial School and the War Industry School.
After 1911, China's educational reform introduced western engineering technology education and trained a number of engineering talents;The number of returned students is also increasing, forming a team of modern Chinese engineers and technicians.
In 1918, more than 20 scholars and engineering technicians studying in the United States were founded at Cornell University“Chinese Engineering Society”。A few years later, he moved back to China and established the association in Shanghai.
In 1931, the "Chinese Society of Engineers" and the "Chinese Engineering Society" were merged and established“Chinese Society of Engineers”There are 15 specialized societies, including China Mechanical Engineering Society.
On October 10, 1935,Liu Xianzhou、Wang JixuYang Yi, Li JixiangZhuang Qianding、Gu YuxuanWang Shizhuo and others advocated the establishment of China Mechanical Engineering Society and solicited sponsors.[2]
Establishment of the Institute
On May 21, 1936, 76 promoters gathered at the College of Arts and Sciences of Hangzhou National Zhejiang University to hold the founding meeting of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Chinese Society of Engineers;In the same year, the Society began to publish its journal《mechanical engineering》(Quarterly).
From 1937 to 1945, during the Anti Japanese War, the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society held some academic conferences in Chongqing, Kunming and other places.
From 1947 to 1949, the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society basically stopped its activities.
In 1950, after the first national conference of representatives of natural scientists, the reconstruction of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering was initiated.In the following year, the first national member representative conference of China Mechanical Engineering Society was held.
In 1962, the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society established 10 professional societies, including casting, forging, heat treatment, welding, powder metallurgy, machining, physical and chemical inspection, mechanical transmission, automobile, turbine and boiler.[2]
From September 8 to 11, 1986, the 5th National Congress and 35th Anniversary Annual Meeting of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society was held in Beijing.[3]
From November 24 to 25, 2001, the 8th National Congress of the Representatives of the Members of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering was held in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province.[4]
In 2004, China Mechanical Engineering Society passed the ISO9001: 2000 quality management system certification in the national society.[1]
On November 18, 2006, the 9th National Member Congress of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, the 70th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, and the 2006 annual meeting of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society and the first annual meeting of the Mechanical and Transport Engineering Department of the Chinese Academy of Engineering were opened in Hangzhou.[5]
On November 15, 2011, the 10th National Member Congress of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering was held in Wuhan, Hubei Province.[6]
On November 11, 2016, the 11th member representative meeting of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering held a plenary meeting.[7]
On December 26, 2021, the 12th National Member Congress of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering was held in Shanghai.[8]
On July 30, 2024, the inaugural meeting of the Diamond and Products Branch of China Mechanical Engineering Society was held in ZhengState.[36]

Institutional setup
The highest authority
The highest authority of the Institute is the General Assembly of Members, whose functions and powers are:
（1） Formulate and amend the Articles of Association;
（2） Review the work report and financial report of the Council;
（3） Elect and remove directors of the Board of Directors and supervisors of the Board of Supervisors;
（4） Formulate and revise the membership fee standard;
（5） Decide on termination;
（6） To decide on the establishment of honorary posts;
（7） Decide on other major issues of the Institute.
The general meeting of member representatives can be convened only when more than two-thirds of the members' representatives are present, and its resolution can take effect only when more than half of the members' representatives present vote.The formulation and amendment of the Articles of Association shall be approved by more than two-thirds of the representatives of the members present at the meeting, and shall not be voted by acclamation.The general meeting of members' representatives involving the change of the term of office shall not be convened by means of communication.
The General Assembly of Member Representatives is held for five years.If the term of office needs to be changed in advance or postponed due to special circumstances, it must be voted by the Council, reported to the competent business unit for review and approved by the society registration authority.The extension of the term of office shall not exceed one year.[9]

The Council is the executive body of the General Assembly of Members, leading the Institute to carry out daily work when the General Assembly of Members is not in session, and is responsible for the General Assembly of Members.
The functions and powers of the Council are:
（1） Implement the resolutions of the General Assembly of Members;
（2） Elect and remove the chairman, vice chairmen and executive directors, and appoint or dismiss the secretary-general;
（3） To prepare for the convening of the General Assembly of Member Representatives;
（4） Report work and financial status to the member congress;
（5） To decide on the admission and expulsion of members;
（6） To decide on the establishment, change and termination of offices, branches, representative offices and entities;
（7） To decide on the appointment or dismissal of the Deputy Secretary General and the principal heads of the agencies;
（8） To lead the work of all institutions of the Institute;
（9） Develop internal management system and supervise its implementation;
（10） Decide on candidates for honorary positions;
（11） Decide on other important matters.
The board of directors can be convened only when more than two-thirds of the directors are present;The resolution must be approved by more than two-thirds of the directors present at the meeting.If the directors cannot attend the meeting, they can entrust representatives to attend and have the right to vote by proxy.Matters decided democratically shall not be voted by acclamation.
The Council shall meet at least once a year;In special circumstances, it can also be held in the form of communication.
The institute establishes a standing council.The standing directors shall be elected by the Council, and the number of them shall not exceed one third of the number of the Council.When the Council is not in session, exercise the functions and powers specified in Article 20, Items 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, and be responsible to the Council.
The executive council can be convened only when more than two-thirds of the executive directors are present, and its resolution can take effect only after being voted by more than two-thirds of the executive directors present at the meeting.
The Standing Council shall hold a meeting at least half a year;In special circumstances, it can also be held in the form of communication.
When the Standing Council is not in session, the Chairman's Office will lead and supervise the daily work, study and discuss the major issues of the Society and make relevant suggestions to the Standing Council and the Council of the Society.The office meeting of the chairman of the board of directors shall be convened by the chairman of the board of directors or the deputy chairman entrusted by the chairman of the board of directors. Generally, once a quarter, the chairman of the board of directors, the deputy chairman of the board of directors, and the secretary-general shall attend the meeting. The board of supervisors may send personnel to attend the meeting as nonvoting delegates.[9]

Member classification
The members of the society include individual members and unit members.
（1） Individual members refer to scientific and technological workers with certain professional and technical qualifications or expertise in mechanical engineering and related fields who voluntarily join the society in their own names.Individual members are divided into student members, ordinary members, senior members, members and foreign members.Individual members are the main members of the society.
（2） Unit members refer to enterprises, institutions and legally established academic and industrial social organizations (excluding civil society organizations in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) that are related to the academic scope of the Society and its affiliated branches, actively support the activities of the Society, and have certain scientific and technological strength, and are willing to join the Society.
The conditions and development management measures for foreign members shall be formulated separately in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China and the China Association for Science and Technology.[9]
Membership conditions
Members who apply to join the society must meet the following conditions:
（1） Recognize and support the Constitution of the Institute;
（2） Willing to join the society;
（3） Commit to pay membership dues as required;
（4） Has certain influence in the business field of the Institute;
（5） Comply with other relevant conditions of the Administrative Regulations on Members of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering.[9]
Membership procedures
Membership procedures:
（1） Submit application for membership;
（2） It is discussed and adopted by the Council or the body authorized by the Council;
（3） Pay membership dues;
（4） The membership card shall be issued by the Council or the institution authorized by the Council.[9]
Rights and obligations of members
（1） Members enjoy the following rights:
1. The right to vote, stand for election and vote of the Institute (except student members and foreign members);
2. The right to criticize, suggest and supervise the work of the Institute;
3. The preferential right or priority to participate in the activities of the Institute and obtain the services of the Institute;
4. Voluntary membership and freedom to withdraw.
（2） Members shall perform the following obligations:
1. Abide by the articles of association of the Institute and implement the resolutions of the Institute;
2. Consciously safeguard the reputation and legitimate rights and interests of the Institute;
3. Actively participate in various activities of the society and complete the work assigned by the society;
4. Assist the Society in developing and contacting members, and make suggestions for the development of the Society;
5. Pay membership dues as required;
6. Report the situation to the society and provide relevant information.[9]
Withdrawal instructions
When a member withdraws from the association, he/she shall notify the association in writing and return his/her membership card.
If there are no special circumstances, the member who fails to pay the membership fee or participate in the activities of the society one year after the deadline shall be deemed to have automatically withdrawn from the society.
If a member seriously violates the Articles of Association, he/she will be expelled after being voted by the Council or the Standing Council of the Society;Those who violate the criminal law will have their membership revoked automatically.[9]

Experts and scholars who have made significant contributions to the development of mechanical engineering and related disciplines or professional science and technology and the work of the Society can be awarded the title of honorary member after discussion and approval by the Council of the Society.
Foreign experts and scholars who have made important contributions to the development of mechanical engineering and related disciplines or specialties, have high academic prestige, and are enthusiastic about participating in or assisting in organizing scientific and technological exchanges can be awarded honorary members after discussion and approval by the Council of the Society.[9]

Annual Meeting of China Mechanical Engineering Society
The annual meeting of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society is a large-scale comprehensive meeting integrating various thematic activities. The annual meeting includes keynote report meeting, thematic academic meeting, scientific and technological progress release, forum, lecture, exhibition, award and other activities.[1]
From October 14 to 15, 2023, the 2023 annual meeting of China Mechanical Engineering Society will be held in Dalian.The theme of this annual meeting is "science and technology empowering power building, innovation leading, self-reliance and self-improvement", which is hosted by the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society and undertaken by Dalian University of Technology and Dalian Association for Science and Technology.[15]

China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Award
China Machinery Industry Science and Technology AwardAccording to the relevant provisions of the Regulations on National Science and Technology Awards and the Administrative Measures for the Establishment of Science and Technology Awards by Social Forces, it is a comprehensive science and technology award for the national machinery industry jointly established by the China Machinery Industry Federation and the China Mechanical Engineering Society, approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, and registered in the competent department of national science and technology awards.China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Award is a national comprehensive science and technology award for the machinery industry, and is also the main channel for the machinery industry to apply for the National Science and Technology Progress Award.[28]
Science and Technology Achievement Award of China Mechanical Engineering Society
The Science and Technology Achievement Award of China Mechanical Engineering Society aims to commend the scientific and technological workers who have influence in China's mechanical science and technology circles and have made important contributions to scientific research, design, teaching, production, management, as well as national major engineering construction and major equipment development.[29]
Science popularization activities
On May 21, 2023, the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering, together with the China Science and Technology Museum, held a parent-child activity on the member day with the theme of "Youth meets you". More than 300 members of the Society, mechanical science and technology workers and family members participated in the activity.[30]
Training
From June 27 to July 1, 2023, the "Advanced Seminar on Enhancing the Ability of Professional Technology Transfer and Transformation in the Field of High end Equipment Manufacturing" was held in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province.The seminar was approved by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of the People's Republic of China and the China Association for Science and Technology, sponsored by the Science and Technology Innovation Department of the China Association for Science and Technology, and co organized by the China Mechanical Engineering Society, Quzhou University, Quzhou Institute of Intelligent Manufacturing Technology and Equipment, Quzhou Double Carbon Research Center, and Quzhou Association for Science and Technology.More than 100 people from enterprises, colleges and universities, experts and scholars in high-end equipment field, and engineering technicians from both inside and outside Zhejiang Province participated in the training online and offline.[31]
