Ministry of Foreign Affairs Answers to journalists on issues related to the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Gambia
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 17 - Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang answered questions about the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Gambia on March 17.
Q: Gambia broke off diplomatic ties with Taiwan as early as 2013. Why did China choose to resume diplomatic relations with Gambia at this time. Is this a warning to Taiwan's incoming leaders.
A: The time for the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Gambia is determined by both parties through consultation. As you mentioned, Gambia has no so-called "diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan authorities. The resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Gambia is not aimed at anyone. Our policy of adhering to the one China principle and promoting the peaceful development of cross Strait relations has not changed.
Q: Does the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Gambia mean the end of the "diplomatic truce" between the two sides. Whether the mainland will seek to establish and resume diplomatic relations with more Taiwan "diplomatic countries".
A: As we all know, there is only one China in the world. Both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China. China's sovereignty and territorial integrity brook no division. The Chinese government has always adhered to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the One China Principle to develop friendly and cooperative relations with all countries in the world. We have always handled Taiwan's foreign exchanges on the basis of the one China principle and opposed any activities aimed at creating "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan".
Q: During the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Gambia, does China promise to provide Gambia with huge assistance.
A: The resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Gambia is based on the principles of mutual respect, equality, mutual trust and mutual benefit. After the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries, China will discuss in depth friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields with Gambia.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi held fruitful talks with Foreign Minister Gay. Both sides agreed to uphold and consolidate the political foundation of one China and maintain the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations. The two sides agreed to strengthen personnel exchanges at all levels, constantly enhance mutual understanding and trust, and actively explore mutually beneficial cooperation in six priority areas, including agriculture and fishery, processing and manufacturing, investment and trade facilitation, infrastructure construction, human resources development, and people to people and cultural exchanges, so that the two peoples can gain more tangible benefits in the recovery and development of China Venezuela relations.
On August 10, 2022, Vice President Zhu Fu of Gambia stressed that the Gambian side firmly adheres to the one China policy and is committed to developing Gambian China friendship. The Gambian government and people always stand with the Chinese government and people. [13]
