The school was founded in 1952, formerly known as Northeast University of Finance and Economics, and its campus is located in Shenyang.In 1958, Northeast University of Finance and Economics merged with Shenyang Normal University and Shenyang Russian College to form Liaoning University.In 1959, the main body of the former Northeast University of Finance and Economics merged with Liaoning Business School in Dalian to establish Liaoning University of Finance and Economics, located atDalian。Liaoning University of Finance and Economics is the only financial undergraduate university that was completely retained in China during the Cultural Revolution. It was under the management of the Ministry of Finance in 1979 and renamed as Northeast University of Finance and Economics in 1985.Dongbei University of Finance and Economics was transferred to Liaoning Province in 2000 to implement the management system of co construction between the central and local governments and focusing on local areas. In 2012, it became a university co built by the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Liaoning Province. In 2017, it became a key university to build a first-class university in Liaoning Province. In 2019, it became a university to build a "domestic first-class university" in Liaoning Province.[119]

In October 1952, the Northeast People's Government, in accordance with the national college adjustment plan issued by the Ministry of Education, decided to set up the Northeast Special School of Finance (founded by the Ministry of Finance of the Northeast People's Government in 1950), the Northeast Bank Special School (founded by the head office of the Northeast People's Bank in 1950), and the Northeast Institute of Planning and Statistics (founded by the Economic Planning Commission of the Northeast People's Government in 1951)And Northeast Renmin University (nowJilin University）The Department of Finance and Credit and the Department of Accounting Statistics were merged to establish the Northeast Institute of Finance and Economics in Shenyang.[3-6]
In August 1953, according to the national college department adjustment plan of the Ministry of Higher Education, Northeast Commercial College and Northeast Cooperation College (founded by Northeast Supply and Marketing Cooperative in 1951) were merged into Northeast Institute of Finance and Economics.
In May 1954, according to the plan of the Ministry of Higher Education on the adjustment and establishment of the national finance and economics colleges and departments, the industrial economics specialty of Northeast Renmin University and the industrial statistics and industrial accounting specialty of Northeast Industrial Accounting Statistics College were merged into Northeast Finance and Economics College.
In July 1958, the CPC Liaoning Provincial Committee decided to merge the Northeast University of Finance and Economics with Shenyang Normal University and Shenyang Russian College to form a comprehensive Liaoning University.All resources of Northeast University of Finance and Economics were merged into Liaoning University, forming three departments of economics, finance and statistics.
In July 1959, the CPC Liaoning Provincial Committee decided to merge the two departments of finance and statistics of Liaoning University, as well as some teachers of economics majors in trade and economics and other departments, with Liaoning Business School, and establish Liaoning Institute of Finance and Economics in Dalian.
From 1966 to 1976, the university was the only financial undergraduate college that was completely preserved in China during the Cultural Revolution.
In 1979, Liaoning Institute of Finance and Economics was under the leadership of the Ministry of Finance.
On October 15, 1985, Liaoning University of Finance and Economics was renamed as Northeast University of Finance and Economics, and was then General Secretary of the CPC Central CommitteeHu YaobangComrade inscribed the name of the new school.
In March 1997, the Ministry of Finance of the People's Republic of China, Liaoning Provincial Government and Dalian Municipal Government held a signing ceremony for the agreement to jointly build Northeast University of Finance and Economics.
In 2000, the Northeast University of Finance and Economics was put under the management of the People's Government of Liaoning Province by the Ministry of Finance, and a management system based on the management of Liaoning Province was implemented.[7]
In September 2004, the signing ceremony of the comprehensive cooperation agreement between Dongbei University of Finance and Economics and Jinzhou Municipal Government was held.[8]
In 2005, the school signed a cooperation agreement with the Economic Commission of Liaoning Province.[9]
In February 2009, the school won the "Acceptance"Chinese Government Scholarship The qualification of "International Student Institutions of Higher Learning".In November, the National Tourism Administration“China Tourism Research InstituteThe inauguration ceremony of the Basic Tourism Theory Research Base was held in the school.[12-13]
In May 2010, the university signed a planning cooperation agreement with Dalian Branch of China Development Bank.In September, School of Tourism and Hotel Management of Northeast University of Finance and Economics joined“T10 Alliance of China's Famous Tourism Schools"In December, the university signed a strategic cooperation memorandum with the Australian Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Scientific research achievements
As of April 2024, the university has won 31 major projects of the National Social Science Fund for 15 consecutive years, and 23 outstanding achievements in science (humanities and social sciences) awarded by the Ministry of Education.The school's teachers have published hundreds of papers on authoritative academic journals in Chinese and foreign languages, and many academic works have been selected into the national library of achievements in philosophy and social sciences and the "four groups" talent works library.[83]
As of December 2019, since 2009, Dongbei University of Finance and Economics is the only institution of higher learning in Liaoning Province that has been approved as a major project of the National Social Science Fund for 11 consecutive years.
