Northeast Forestry University was founded in July 1952, formerly known as Northeast Forestry University. It was founded on the basis of the Forestry Department of Zhejiang University Agricultural College and the Forestry Department of Northeast Agricultural College, and was directly under the management of the former Ministry of Forestry.In 1985, it was renamed Northeast Forestry University.In 2000, it was directly under the management of the Ministry of Education, and in 2005, it was approved as a key university of the national "211 Project".In 2010 and 2012, the Education Department signed an agreement with the former State Forestry Administration and the People's Government of Heilongjiang Province to jointly build Northeast Forestry University.In 2011, it became a key university of the national "advantageous discipline innovation platform" project.In 2017, it was selected as a national "double first-class" construction university[8]。

Northeast Forestry University (1952-1984)
In October 1952, the Northeast People's Government issued Dongfu (52) Jiao Zi No. 2857 document and decided to establish the Northeast Forestry University.On November 20 of that year, it was officially listed as Northeast Agriculture and Forestry College.The college was established on the basis of the Forestry Department of Zhejiang University College of Agriculture and the Forestry Department of Northeast Agricultural College in the process of national college and department adjustment, and merged the Forestry Department of Heilongjiang Agricultural College into the college[48]。

In February 1955, in order to meet the needs of school construction, the university set up the infrastructure engineering teams of the two academies of agriculture and forestry to build school buildings for the independent construction of Northeast Forestry University.On May 1, the then President Liu Chengdong and Vice President Wang Yuming dug the first shovel of soil, opening the prelude to the independent establishment and thrifty running of Northeast Forestry University.On September 12, students from two departments of Northeast Forestry University (Department of Forestry and Department of Forest Industry) moved to the new teaching building for classes[49]。

In April 1956, the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Forestry decided to separate the two academies immediately.On May 4, Northeast Agricultural and Forestry University held a staff meeting, and on May 11, announced the name list of the Board of Trustees of Northeast Forestry University and the name list of heads of departments and teaching and research groups;On the 21st, the list of heads of administrative units at all levels was announced.At this point, the Northeast Academy of Agriculture and Forestry officially separated and moved towards a new stage of independent development[50]。
In August 1957, the preparation for the establishment of Maoershan Experimental Forest Farm began. At the beginning of the construction of the farm, only a small number of decentralized cadres and some teachers and students who participated in production and labor built houses and roads at the foot of Maoershan, carried out survey and planning, nurtured and forested, and used people to pull plows to open up wasteland, laying the foundation for the development of the forest farm.In February 1958, Liangshui Experimental Forest Farm was established[51]。On April 27, the first party meeting of Northeast Forestry University was successfully concluded. After the adjournment, all branches held a continuous broadcast discussion, conducted a comprehensive inspection of the work of the party committee in the past two years, and put forward many important suggestions on improving the work of the party committee and strengthening the leadership of the party[52]。In October, Dailing Branch was officially established[27]。
In October 1968, teachers and students of all departments went to the mountain for "political camping".In fact, the school is relocated. The school is located in Dailing, and Harbin has a left behind office.The forestry department goes to Meixi and Dafeng Forestry Bureau, the mining and transportation department goes to Liangshui Forest Farm, the water conservancy department goes to Nancha Forestry Bureau, the machinery department goes to Cuilan Forestry Bureau, and the road goes to Youhao and Shuangzihe Forestry Bureau to participate in labor[27]At the same time, it was incorporated into Dailing Forestry Cadre College, and the leadership relationship was delegated to Heilongjiang Province.In 1970, a large number of teachers and cadres went to the countryside to join the queue, and the school did not formally recruit students for seven consecutive years.In June 1973, at the suggestion of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the province decided to move Northeast Forestry University back to Harbin to run a school.On July 10 of the same year, it was moved back to the original site in Harbin[53]。
In 1974, the school officially established the Maoershan Forest Ecological Station. Through the long-term unremitting efforts of a group of ecological scholars, such as Chen Dake, Zhou Xiaofeng, Wang Yihong, Zhao Huixun, Wang Chuankuan, etc., the Maoershan Forest Ecological Station became one of the first national field scientific observation and research pilot stations in China in 1999[54]。

In 1985, the Ministry of Forestry issued a document, and the school was officially renamed as Northeast Forestry University from Northeast Forestry University. The school entered a new stage of "accelerating development and expanding school running forms"[55]。
In February 1992, with the approval of the Ministry of Forestry, the original forestry engineering survey and design institute of the university was renamed Donglin University Engineering Survey and Design Institute;In July, the "Northeast Forestry University Training Department of the Ministry of Forestry" was renamed as the "Adult Education College of Northeast Forestry University of the Ministry of Forestry".In October 1993, the College of Forest Resources and Environment was established.[27]
On May 5, 1995, Professor Ma Jianzhang, President of the School of Wildlife Resources and a famous wildlife expert, was approved as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering[56]。In November 1995, with the approval of the Ministry of Forestry, the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was established on the basis of the original Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering[27]。
In February 1996, the school took the lead in raising funds to carry out the "211 Project" construction, and in November of the same year, it was approved by the former Ministry of Forestry and reported to the State Education Commission for the record.This decision gave Northeast Forestry University a chance to become a strong university and laid the foundation for the leapfrog development of the university.In January 1997, the school officially passed the examination and approval of the "211 Project" construction project organized by the former Ministry of Forestry.[57]

On March 6, 1998, the School of Landscape Architecture of Northeast Forestry University was established[27]。In 1999, the school was awarded the title of "National Advanced Unit for Spiritual Civilization Construction" by the Central Steering Committee for Spiritual Civilization Construction[58]。On February 18, 2000, the school was officially transferred from the State Forestry Administration to the Ministry of Education and became a university directly under the Ministry of Education, which is another new and important milestone in the history of the school[59]。
On September 8, 2005, approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education, Northeast Forestry University was officially included in the national "211 Project" construction plan[60]。In September 2006, the university accepted the evaluation of undergraduate teaching by the Ministry of Education, and the evaluation result was excellent[61]。
On October 19, 2008, the alumni association of Northeast Forestry University was officially established[27]。In August 2009, the school was awarded the title of "National Ecological Civilization Education Base"[27]；In December of the same year, it won the title of "Top Ten Harmonious Campus" in Heilongjiang Province[62]。On November 29, 2010, the Ministry of Education and the State Forestry Administration held a signing ceremony at Beijing Forestry University to jointly build three universities directly under the Ministry of Education: Northeast Forestry University, Beijing Forestry University and Northwest A&F University[27]。
In June 2011, the project of "Innovation Platform of Superior Disciplines for Sustainable Management and Efficient Utilization of Forest Resources" declared by the university was approved by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, which marks that the university has become a key construction university of the national "985 Project Superior Disciplines Innovation Platform"[27]。On December 8, Professor Li Jian, the former president of the university, was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering[63]。
In February 2012, the university was selected into the second batch of national excellent engineer education and training plan universities[92]。In March,ministry of education、Heilongjiang Provincial People's GovernmentJointly build Northeast Forestry University[27]。In July, the State Key Laboratory of Forest Genetics and Breeding of Northeast Forestry University was inaugurated, which is the first national key laboratory in China's forestry industry[64]。
On June 9, 2013, the school and the State Forestry Administration jointly built the China (Harbin) Forest Museum, which is the first thematic forest museum in China[65]The museum was named Heilongjiang Youth Science Popularization Base on July 5[27]。In October, the "Korean Pine Engineering Technology Research Center of the State Forestry Administration" approved by the State Forestry Administration settled in the school[66]。On November 20, the Forestry Research (English version) sponsored by the university was selected into the "Plan for Improving the International Influence of Chinese Sci tech Journals", and won the support of Class B projects, becoming the first English academic journal in China's forestry field to receive national funding support[27]。In September 2014, the school was selected into the first batch of the countryExcellent Agriculture and Forestry Talents Education and Training PlanPilot universities[3]。
On March 11, 2015, the Ministry of Education issued the No. 51 Approval Letter of the Constitution of Colleges and Universities, which formally approved the Constitution of Northeast Forestry University, marking that our university has made significant progress in building a modern university system[67]。In 2016, the Ministry of Education approved the Overall Planning and Design of the Main Campus of Northeast Forestry University[68]。In July 2017, the university was approved by the Ministry of Education to "deepen the innovation and entrepreneurship education reform model university"[91]；In September, it was selected into the first batch of national“"Double First-Class" initiative”Building colleges and universities[69]；In December, it was selected as the 2017 "National University Practice Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base"[91]。

In December 2018, the "National Innovation Alliance for Nature Reserves", "National Innovation Alliance for Northeast Forest Resources Processing and Utilization Industry" and "National Innovation Alliance for Forest and Grassland Fire Prevention and Control Technology", which were approved by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration and led by the university, were successfully inaugurated[27]。
On April 15, 2019, the Ministry of Education agreed to cooperate with the University of Auckland in New Zealand in running schools and set up the Olin College of Northeast Forestry University, whose English translation is Aulin College,Northeast Forestry University。The college is one of the 95 Chinese foreign cooperatively run schools in China, and also the first Chinese foreign cooperatively run school in Heilongjiang Province that has both undergraduate and postgraduate majors and is not an independent legal person[27]。In December, Northeast Forestry University established the first college of chemistry, chemical engineering and resource utilization in China[27]。

By the end of August 2022, the library of Northeast Forestry University has 2.4313 million paper books (including reference rooms of colleges and departments and branch libraries), 920500 electronic books, 916800 electronic journals, 6.13 million electronic dissertations, 423000 audio and video hours, 127 digital resources in Chinese and foreign languages, which is one of the most complete libraries for collecting information on forestry literature in China,It is also the designated collection of FAO publications, the science and technology novelty search workstation of the Ministry of Education and the China Forestry Intellectual Property Information Center[6]。
Museum Collection
As of May 2022, there are nearly 1000 exhibits in the China (Harbin) Forest Museum, including 30000 year old petrel sturgeon fossils, African wildlife specimens, and buildings and furniture related to primitive human life[43]
The Wild Animal Fur Specimen Room of Northeast Forestry University is decorated with the natural color of wood, which sets off the fur. There are more than 1700 fur specimens of more than 150 rare and endangered animals, including all the precious furs produced in China, including all species of Felidae, Viverridae, Mustelidae and Canidae.There are rare specimens of giant panda, golden monkey, gibbon, etc[42]。
English forestry academic journal jointly sponsored by Northeast Forestry University and China Ecological Society, and managed by the Ministry of Education.On the basis of being included in 20 international literature databases (BIOSIS, ChemicalAbstract, AbstractJournal of VINITI, etc.), Forestry Research (English version) has been included in the evaluation databases Science Citation Index Expanded (SciSearch) and Journal Citation Reports (JCR)/Science Edition since the first issue in 2013.In 2019, it was selected into "China Science and Technology Journals Excellence Action Plan I - Echelon Journals Project" and became a national key scientific and technological journal.[18]
It is under the charge of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, sponsored by Northeast Forestry University, China Zoo Association, and China Wildlife Conservation Association, and edited by Academician Ma Jianzhang.It is the only national magazine in China that combines science popularization and protection management of wildlife and focuses on science popularization.[21]
An academic journal organized by the Ministry of Education, China Forestry Economic Society and Northeast Forestry University.Formerly known as "China Forestry Enterprises", this journal was changed from a quarterly to a bimonthly in 1996, and renamed as "China Forestry Economy" in 2005. In 1996, the magazine won the third prize of Heilongjiang Provincial Science and Technology Periodical, and in 2000, it was awarded Heilongjiang Provincial Excellent Science and Technology Periodical. In 2002, it was evaluated by the Provincial Department of Education, the Provincial Press and Publication Bureau, the Provincial Department of Science and TechnologyThe provincial language and writing work committee was rated as an excellent journal. In 2008, it won the nomination award of the first publishing award of Heilongjiang Province, and in 2009, it won the excellent journal award of northern China (11 provinces and regions).[22]

Approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the General Administration of Press and Publication of the People's Republic of China, the national academic journal is the journal of the Forest Engineering Branch of the Chinese Society of Forestry.It has been successively rated as the outstanding scientific and technological journal of Chinese universities, and in 2020, it was rated as the "core journal of China's agriculture and forestry".[19]
A comprehensive academic journal of botany sponsored by Northeast Forestry University and supervised by the Ministry of Education.When it was first published, it was called Collection of Herbarium, and was edited by Zhou Yiliang, an expert in Chinese botany. It was one of the earliest journals in Chinese botany.Plant Research is now a core journal in Chinese and a core journal in science and technology in China. Maoershan Teaching Area of Northeast Forestry University (Experimental Forest Farm, hereinafter referred to as "Teaching Area") is located in Maoershan Town, Shangzhi City, Heilongjiang Province. It is a base for teaching, scientific research, practice, training and achievement promotion and transformation of Northeast Forestry University.The vegetation in Maoershan area belongs to Changbai flora, which is a typical natural secondary forest area in the east of Northeast China. The original zonal top community is Korean pine broad-leaved forest.Due to the invasion and destruction of Japan and Russia, the original vegetation has undergone a reverse succession.It has formed a forest landscape of natural secondary forests dominated by precious broad-leaved forests, poplar birch forests, oak forests, and artificial forests such as Korean pine, larch, and scotch pine.The average forest coverage rate is 95.7%, and the total forest stock is 4.12 million m3.The teaching area is rich in resources, with various natural secondary forests, more than 1000 kinds of woody and herbaceous plants, more than 400 kinds of animals and birds, and more than 1200 kinds of insects.[88]

The Liangshui Experimental Forest Farm of Northeast Forestry University (Liangshui National Nature Reserve) was founded in 1958. With the approval of the former Ministry of Forestry (State Forestry Administration) and the People's Government of Heilongjiang Province, the Liangshui Experimental Forest Farm was established on the basis of the second logging farm of the original Dailing Forestry Experimental Bureau, and was under the jurisdiction of Northeast Forestry University.Liangshui Experimental Forest Farm is one of the scientific research and teaching practice bases directly under Northeast Forestry University. At present, it has formed a comprehensive experimental forest farm integrating teaching practice, scientific research, science popularization and eco-tourism.The zonal vegetation of Liangshui Experimental Forest Farm is a temperate coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest dominated by Korean pine, which belongs to the northern sub zone of the temperate coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest zone. The typical sub zone of broad-leaved Korean pine forest is the center of the distribution of Korean pine forests in the world, with greater typicality and representativeness.The vegetation in the whole area can be divided into 11 formations and 19 associations of 6 vegetation types, including cold temperate coniferous forest, temperate mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest, deciduous broad-leaved forest, shrub, meadow, swamp, etc.[89]
