In 1957, as the international situation tended to ease, according to the actual situation of Jiaotong University and the construction needs of Shanghai and Xi'an, the State Council decided to move most of the specialties and teachers and students of Jiaotong University to Xi'an as the Xi'an part of Jiaotong University;A small part stayed in Shanghai and merged with the former Shanghai Shipbuilding Institute and the Nanyang Institute of Technology under preparation. As the Shanghai part of Jiaotong University, the two parts are one school, one system and unified leadership.[158]

In March 1959, the central government issued the Decision on Designating a Group of Key Universities in Institutions of Higher Learning, which listed Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shanghai Jiaotong University as one of the 16 key universities in China.This is the first time that officials have explicitly referred to the Xi'an and Shanghai parts of Jiaotong University as Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shanghai Jiaotong University.[25][158]
On July 31, 1959, the State Council approved the Shanghai part and Xi'an part of Jiaotong University to be two separate schools.In the same year, with the approval of the State Council, the Shanghai part of Jiaotong University was officially namedShanghai Jiaotong University。
On February 6, 1961, the Central Committee decided that Shanghai Jiaotong University should be under the direct leadership of the National Defense Science and Technology Commission, and under the leadership of the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee.
On November 26, 1981, with the approval of the State Council, Shanghai Jiaotong University became one of the first batch of doctoral and master degree awarding units in China.[26]

On December 28, 2017, the Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education released the results of the fourth round of national disciplinary evaluation rankings in 2016.Shanghai Jiaotong University ranks A+in five disciplines, namely, ship and marine engineering, mechanical engineering, clinical medicine, biology, and business administration.The top 5% of the 10 disciplines are 15, ranking the fourth in China.Ten disciplines rank A-level.[89]

In September 2009, the Ministry of Education announced the list of award-winning projects of the 6th National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education. Shanghai Jiaotong University won 2 first prizes (as a participating unit and an independent unit, respectively) and 10 second prizes (7 independently and 3 independently).
In September 2014, the Ministry of Education announced the list of award-winning achievements of the 7th National Teaching Achievement Award (2009-2014), and 13 achievements of Shanghai Jiaotong University won the 2014 National Teaching Achievement Award.Among them, 12 are national teaching achievement awards for higher education.Among the 12 awards, Jiaotong University, as an independent unit, won 6 awards, 2 first prizes and 4 second prizes;As a participating unit, it has won 6 awards, 1 grand prize and 5 second prizes.In addition, the High School Affiliated to Jiaotong University as an independent unit won one second prize of national teaching achievement for basic education.

In August 2023, Nano Energy (IF=17.6) published an article by Shen Wenzhong's research group from the School of Physics and Astronomy of Shanghai Jiaotong University entitled "In situ artistic wide band gap Cs based recursive arrays for optical optimization of perovskite solar cells".This research shows that the in situ light management strategy is of great significance for improving the photoelectric conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells, and provides a new perspective for the design of multi-functional optical structures[176]。

In 2015, Shanghai Jiaotong University received 920 NSFC projects with a total funding of 613 million yuan.There are 483 general projects, with direct funding of 2864170000 yuan;There are 330 youth science funds, with direct funding of 61.616 million yuan;There are 2 innovative research group projects, 4 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 14 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 28 key projects, 1 major project (leading), 9 major research projects (including 3 key support and 1 integrated project), 1 national major research instrument development project, and 3 overseas and Hong Kong Macao scholars' cooperative research fund projects,9 joint fund projects (including 3 key support projects), 11 emergency management projects, 31 international cooperation research and exchange projects (including 5 key projects).[76]
In 2020, a total of 1229 projects of Shanghai Jiaotong University were funded by CNOOC, with a total direct funding of 817 million yuan.Among them, there are 1 science center and 11 outstanding youth, ranking fifth in China;25 excellent youth programs, the second in China.29 projects were supported by the key research and development plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology, with a total funding of about 1.021 billion yuan, presided over 66 key special subjects, and undertook about 1.337 billion yuan in total.The contract funds for national defense scientific research projects are 1.588 billion yuan, with 26 projects above 10 million level (inclusive).The first batch of "New Coronavirus Prevention and Treatment Project of the Medical and Industrial Cross Research Fund" was launched nationwide, with 32 projects funded with a total of 22.55 million yuan.[190]

The font of the name of Shanghai Jiaotong University is Mao typeface, and the core word of the name is "Jiaotong".
In 1912 (the first year of the Republic of China), the school was changed to BeijingNational GovernmentMinistry of Transport, renamedShanghai Industrial School of the Ministry of Communications。The railway department was changed into the civil engineering department, and the electrical machinery department was changed into the electrical machinery department.[11]This is the source of "transportation" of "Jiaotong University" - "transportation" of "Ministry of Transport".
