On April 8, a construction worker in Hefei fell down carelessly during operation and was sent to Xinqiao Hospital of Hefei First People's Hospital for emergency treatment. A multidisciplinary team of experts from orthopaedics and other disciplines came to the stage for surgery at the first time, which saved the 20-year-old boy from the fate of paraplegia.

"The patient fell from a 4m high platform, resulting in a burst fracture of the lumbar vertebrae of the spine. The fracture block caused space occupying in the vertebral canal, and the spinal cord nerve was compressed. The situation was urgent." According to Li Chun, the chief orthopedic physician, the patient could not move his legs when coming to the hospital, and faced the possibility of paraplegia of both lower limbs. At nightfall, Xinqiao Hospital immediately established a rescue team composed of experts from orthopaedics, imaging, anesthesiology, operating room and other disciplines to help patients relieve spinal cord compression with minimally invasive fracture internal fixation technology. After the operation, the patient's sensory and motor functions of lower limbs recovered immediately, and all vital signs were stable.

"My legs have been saved at last, and I haven't lost my disability. Thank you to the doctors in Xinqiao." The patient's parents said gratefully when they saw their son turn around after coming from other places.

The Xinqiao Hospital District of Hefei First People's Hospital opened in December 2023 to protect the health of the masses in the demonstration area. The successful implementation of the emergency operation for this case of spinal fracture combined with incomplete lower limb paralysis reflects the comprehensive ability of the hospital in responding to public health emergencies and emergency treatment.
