Hong'an County, Hubei Province, known as "the first general county in China", has again put the removal of the county to a city on the agenda.

According to the official website of Hong'an County Government, Liu Tangjun, the head of Hong'an County, presided over the 59th executive meeting of the 17th People's Government of Hong'an County on the afternoon of November 24.

According to the report, the meeting studied the work related to "removing counties and establishing cities". It is required to attach great importance to, fully understand the great significance of removing counties and establishing cities, unify ideas, and speed up the work of making up for shortcomings; Quickly act, carefully compare the indicators and declaration process of "removing counties and establishing cities", formulate the work plan of removing counties and establishing cities, and clarify the tasks, responsible units, responsible leaders and time nodes; Strive for support, take the initiative to strengthen communication and reporting with the superior counterparts, seize the opportunities such as the national new urbanization pilot and the fixed-point assistance of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development, and actively strive for support and guidance.

Pengpai News (www.thepaper.cn) noted that Hong'an County has proposed to "remove the county and establish a city" for a long time. As early as in the work report of Hong'an County Government released in February 2016, it has clearly requested that "actively promote the removal of the county and the establishment of the city".

According to the official website of Hong'an County Government, Hong'an, formerly known as Huang'an, is located at the southern foot of Dabie Mountain in the northeast of Hubei Province, bordering Wuhan in the south, Henan in the north, Macheng in the east, Huangpi and Dawu in the west. The county seat is 80 kilometers away from the provincial capital Wuhan. With a total area of 1796 square kilometers, the county has jurisdiction over 13 township farms and 396 administrative villages.

Hong'an County is a typical mountainous agricultural county, a key county in the new round of national poverty alleviation and development work, and a demonstration pilot county in the construction of old areas. During the Great Revolution, the first shot of the jute uprising was fired here, and three main forces of the Red Army were born: the Fourth Front Army, the Twenty fifth Army and the Twenty eighth Army.

It is worth mentioning that two former presidents (acting presidents), Dong Biwu and Li Xiannian, and 223 generals, including Chen Xilian, Han Xianchu and Qin Jiwei, were born in Hong'an County, making Hong'an the world famous "No.1 General County in China".

In August 2018, Hong'an County was approved by the Hubei Provincial Government to withdraw from the national poverty county list. In June 2020, the National Development and Reform Commission issued the Notice on Accelerating the Work of County Urbanization to Repair the Weaknesses and Strengths, and 120 counties and county-level cities across the country were included in the national demonstration list of new urbanization construction of counties, including Hong'an County.
