When did Mao Zedong decide to establish a revolutionary base in Jinggangshan

Jinggangshan, located in the middle of the Luoxiao Mountains on the border between Hunan and Jiangxi, is the first rural revolutionary base founded by Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Chen Yi and other proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation, and the starting point of the Chinese revolution from failure to victory. Although the struggle in Jinggangshan was not very long, only two years and three months, it left a glorious page in the history of the Chinese revolution.


So when did Mao Zedong decide to establish a revolutionary base in Jinggangshan? There are several statements on this issue in published works:


In June 1993, Mao Zedong's Footprints published by the People's Publishing House recorded that:


One night in September 1927, the Committee of the Former Enemy of the Autumn Harvest Uprising held a military meeting in the classroom of Liren School, Wenjia City, Liuyang County, Hunan Province, presided over by Mao Zedong... The meeting focused on "the direction of the whole army"... Then, the Front Committee began to discuss where to take root.


After listening to everyone's speech, Mao Zedong pointed to the map hanging on the wall and said: "This place like eyebrows is in the middle of the Luoxiao Mountains. It is an ideal foothold with high mountains and dangerous waters, dangerous terrain and dense forests. It has a good mass base and self-sufficient natural resources, especially in the Jinggangshan area. It is a good place to accumulate grass and grain and gather revolutionary forces. We can establish a revolutionary base here. "


The meeting stayed up late into the night. After intense debate, Mao Zedong's proposal to march towards the middle of the Luoxiao Mountains was finally passed.


The next day, the whole army held a teachers' conference at Liren School. At the meeting, Mao Zedong announced the order to march into the Luoxiao Mountains and establish a rural revolutionary base. The above record shows that Mao Zedong decided to establish a revolutionary base in Jinggangshan when he held the military meeting of the former committee of the Autumn Harvest Uprising in Wenjia City on September 19, 1927. This is the first statement.


He Changgong wrote two more comprehensive and systematic recollection articles, "Follow Chairman Mao to Jinggangshan" and "Autumn Harvest Uprising and Attracting Troops to Jinggangshan", which also hold this view.


Most of the books published before and during the "Cultural Revolution" said that Mao Zedong decided to go to Jinggangshan to establish a revolutionary base in Wenjia City.


The Autumn Harvest Uprising on the Hunan Jiangxi Border, published by Hunan People's Publishing House in August 1987, recorded that Mao Zedong "put forward the issue of establishing a revolutionary base in Jinggangshan area during the" Three Bay Reorganization ". The Autumn Harvest Uprising on the Hunan Jiangxi Border, co edited by the CPC Hunan Provincial Party Committee's Party History Collection and Research Committee, Hunan People's Publishing House, August 1987, pp. 20-21. Many old comrades who participated in the Autumn Harvest Uprising also hold this second view in their published recollections. For example, the memories of Chen Shiju and Chen Shenggu both said that when Mao Zedong said in Sanwan, "We need to establish a base area", and Chen Shiju, "Recombination of Memory in Sanwan", January 1961. "We should contact Yuan Wencai and Wang Zuo in Jinggangshan to establish a base area". Chen Shenggu: Memories Marching to Jinggangshan, July 1968.


During his stay in Sanwan, Mao Zedong sent someone to contact Yuan Wencai. Li Li, the messenger of the year, has the same memory. He said:


On September 29, 1927, the Autumn Harvest Uprising Army came to our Sanwan and lived in Xie Sheng and the grocery store. At that time, I was the secretary of the Party branch of Sanwan Village. Comrade Mao Zedong wrote a letter asking me to send it to Yuan Wencai in Maoping, Ninggang. Comrade Mao Zedong has known about this team. After receiving the letter from Mao Zedong delivered to me by Li Desheng, I went home to discuss with my father Li Changshou and asked my uncle to send it to Ninggang with me. Yuan Wencai was very happy to receive the letter and gave me a piece of silver. Later, Yuan sent Chen Muping, a military staff officer, along with Long Chaoqing, secretary of Ninggang County Party Committee, to Sanwan to meet Comrade Mao Zedong. Hunan People's Publishing House put forward the fourth statement in the book "Hunan Party History Series" published in September 1989:


After Mao Zedong led the uprising army to Linghsien Shuikou, there was no further southward movement, but on October 27, they went to the Jinggangshan Mountains to carry out armed separatism and create a revolutionary base. Zhang Zongxun, who was the commander of the ten companies of the third battalion of the first regiment of the Workers' and Peasants' Revolutionary Army during the Autumn Harvest Uprising on the Hunan Jiangxi border and served as the deputy chief of the general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army after the liberation of the whole country, recalled that Shuikou in Lingxian County, Hunan Province, decided to establish a revolutionary base in Jinggangshan. He said that it was at Linghsien Shuikou that the Autumn Harvest Uprising Troops went to the Chingkang Mountains. In Wenjia, instead of going up to the Jinggangshan Mountains, the troops were marching southward to try to get close to the Nanchang Uprising troops. The army held an "activist meeting" in the ancient city, and I attended it, as did comrades from Ninggang and Yongxin County Party Committees.
