SKECH improves the efficiency of business iteration through MSE to easily cope with online promotion

SKECH upgraded the traditional API gateway to a cloud native gateway for traffic communication with external channels, internal old systems, and third-party services, showing better performance in development, operation and maintenance efficiency, performance, and security.

Customer introduction

SKECHERS was born in California, USA in 1992, covering more than 170 countries and regions around the world. It is the second largest footwear brand in the United States after Nike. In November 2020, SKECH announced a cooperation with Alibaba Cloud to accelerate digital upgrading. After the introduction of Alibaba Cloud's mid-range platform, we will further promote omni channel optimization and improve operational efficiency and supply chain management capabilities.

Business challenges

The performance and stability of the self built gateway cannot be guaranteed : SKECH's omni channel business middle office provides API interfaces for external calls through a unified access gateway. Due to the rich business scenarios and numerous systems of SKECH, in recent years, due to the rapid development of business, the traffic peak of activities such as the Double 11 Promotion has posed more challenges to the performance and stability of the self built gateway.

Gateway security is not robust enough : External channels, internal old systems and third-party services need to be interconnected with or provided by the middle office of the business. Due to the different forms of access systems, there is an urgent need for rich security authentication means and unified management.

Improvement of development, operation and maintenance efficiency

MSE Cloud Native Gateway is one of the core capabilities provided by AliCloud microservices engine MSE (Microservices Engine). Using the MSE cloud native gateway, SKECH has directly opened the existing microservice registry, directly connected to the back-end services, and quickly realized the mutual access and unified management between microservices. The grayscale publishing realized by a variety of routing rules can easily meet the requirements of fast iterative online business before big promotion.

Gateway performance

Compared with microservice gateways such as the Spring Cloud Gateway, MSE Cloud native gateways have better performance. At the same time, their load balancing and flow control capabilities can enhance the availability of back-end services to ensure that the middle office system can successfully cope with the double 11 traffic peak.

Gateway security

MSE Cloud Native Gateway integrates the authentication login system, and uses the JWT authentication function and black and white list to quickly build a security barrier for businesses.

Completely observable

The MSE Cloud native gateway provides a wealth of observable data, including traffic global signage, log retrieval, business TOP list, delay/failure rate/error code and other response indicators, and is supplemented by alarm management, so that the operation and maintenance personnel can fully grasp the overall status and abnormal conditions of the service and reduce the workload during the promotion period.
