Debian is a UNIX like operating system composed entirely of free software. Most of the software it contains is licensed under the GNU General Public License, and is packaged, developed and maintained by a team of participants in the Debian Program.The Debian program was initially launched by Ian Murdoch in 1993. Debian version 0.01 was released on September 15, 1993, and its first stable version was released in 1996.
