In 2018, in the Red Sea, a yellow plastic ring was tightly wrapped around the gill of a shark. April 22, 2024 is the 55th World Earth Day with the theme of "Planet vs. Plastics", calling for the rapid elimination of all disposable plastics and the construction of a plastic free planet for future generations. Plastic pollution is a global problem. Of the 7 billion tons of plastic waste generated in the world, less than 10% of plastic waste is recycled. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, the equivalent of 2000 garbage trucks filled with plastic are dumped into oceans, rivers and lakes every day. Figure: IC photo
