User interface design includes different design stages and processes. The importance of these stages or processes varies depending on the project. Note that the system mentioned here refers to all projects including web page, application or device design.

Functional requirements collection: The functions of the system are listed according to the project objectives that the system needs to complete and the potential needs of users.

User analysis: Analyze potential users of the system by discussing with them or those who work with them.

General questions include:

  • What do users want the system to do?
  • How does the system fit in with the user's workflow or daily activities?
  • What is the user's understanding of technology? What similar systems have users used?
  • How does the appearance and aesthetic feeling of the interface compare with the user's taste?

Information construction: The program or information flow to build the system (for example, it is an option tree for the phone tree system, and a site navigation map showing the hierarchical relationship of pages for a website).

Prototyping: Create system wireframes through paper prototypes or simple interactive screens. These prototypes do not have any aesthetic elements and specific contents, but only focus on the interaction itself.

Availability test: Test the prototype with a real user. This process usually uses the way of thinking aloud, that is, to let users speak out their ideas in the experience process.

Graphic interface design: The design process of the interface appearance of the final graphical user interface (GUI). If the usability of the system is difficult to predict, the results created during the usability test can be used as the basis, or the communication goal and the user's favorite style can be used as the basis.

In a few cases, it may be the graphics that determine the prototype, depending on which visual form and function are more important in a particular case. If some interfaces require multiple skins, the same control panel, functional feature or widget may require multiple interface designs.

At this stage, graphic designers and interface designers need to work together, or some expert who is proficient in both aspects.

In short, user interface design requires designers to be fully aware of user needs.
