Wise is a British financial technology company, which was established in 2011 and authorized by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to become an electronic money institution (EMI). The company was originally named TransferWise, renamed Wise in 2021, and listed on the London Stock Exchange. Wise provides international remittance services for people in most countries/regions around the world. It uses the middle market exchange rate without markup for currency exchange, which is the same as the exchange rate we see on exchange rate query websites (such as XE and Reuters).

Because I have registered WISE, some steps cannot provide screenshots. Some registration precautions are sorted out:

full name: Fill in Pinyin , must be consistent with the name on the passport
Choose "China" in your country
Fill in the home address truthfully (domestic address can be filled in without card),
Upload the passport for authentication as required, and then wait for the audit to be completed

Note: If you are worried about the risk control of your address, please fill in your home address at the time of registration, and then change it to your European residential address after you go to Europe for a while (flexible).

Activate WISE account

After the WISE account is approved, you need to deposit (recharge) 20 $for the first time to activate the account function. This 20 $will be saved to your account balance for subsequent use.

Activation is a difficult point. It can accept money transferred from foreign banks such as Bank of America and Bank of Europe, foreign credit cards, debit cards, and international wire transfers. Domestic credit cards are not. At present, Xiaoz has learned that the following methods can be used for deposit activation:

If you have a bank account in the United States and Europe, you can directly select the currency of the corresponding country to activate the transfer (most people may not)
Some virtual cards can be used to deposit money to activate WISE (the way I use). Compared with the card picking head, this can only be tried by myself, but if it fails, it is not recommended to try again and again to avoid risk control (relatively easy)
Some netizens reported that the Kraken platform can activate WISE with cash (need to know about cryptocurrency)
Find a seller on Taobao to help you activate (very easy, but there may be risks)

Note: When recharging, it is not recommended to select RMB (CNY) as the currency, and foreigners' passports will be required!!!

Apply for WISE card

If you have paid to activate your WISE account, then you can apply for a WISE card. Click "Card" on the left navigation bar of WISE to order a new card according to the prompt.

There are three types of WISE cards: "green card", "white card (environmental protection card)" and "virtual card (digital card)". The difference is:

Green card: This is a physical card, which requires a 7 pound card opening fee (one-time), and the card number is printed on the back
White card (environmental protection card): this is a physical card, which requires a card opening fee of 4.5 pounds (one-time), and does not print the card number
Virtual card (digital card): there is no card opening fee and no physical card, which can be managed through WISE background

Applying for WISE card may encounter the following problems:

Prompt that your region does not support it. If the Chinese address filled in by your home address in the above registration step does not support WISE card application. At this time, you need to modify your personal data and change your home address to your residence address in Europe or the United Kingdom (do not fake it, it is based on good faith)
You may not be able to apply for a virtual card directly. In this case, you may need to order a physical card first, and then apply for a virtual card. However, when applying for a physical card, you will be asked to fill in a receiving address, which should not be filled out randomly to avoid the card being returned and affecting your account. WISE card activation

At present, xiaoz has successfully obtained the green card of WISE (the white environmental protection card is still in transit).

To activate the physical card, you need to find an ATM that supports VISA, query the balance once, or withdraw a cash to complete the activation.

Since the PIN code of the WISE card is a 4-digit number, most ATMs may not support it. It is recommended to operate ATMs in four larger banks. Generally, ATMs marked with VISA are acceptable. Xiaoz is activated by withdrawing 100 cash from CCB ATM.

Description of reinsurance

Do not change the home address frequently, otherwise it is easy to trigger the risk control to require the address proof
Don't transfer money to different people frequently, and avoid sending money to unknown people to prevent the connection with bad accounts. Although this is an international remittance tool, you should understand that it is not used for money laundering and must be used legally and in compliance with regulations!
The fund must be legal and compliant, or you may be asked to provide proof of fund source
Once WISE is blocked, it cannot continue to register
