Worker's Daily - reporter Pei Longxiang from China Industrial Network

"Ready to sail!" The harbor in spring has clear water and warm spring breeze. The meritorious large cruise rescue ship "Haixun 01" of China's maritime industry is shining brightly in the sun. In the cockpit, a female captain was looking firmly into the distance and issuing all kinds of control commands decisively.

This calm and introverted post-90s girl is Zhan Chunpei, the first female captain of an ocean going official ship in China. She has stood out among the official ships with an absolute majority of male crew members. She has worked on the "Haixun 01" ship for 10 years. The trainee, the third mate, the second mate, and the first mate came step by step. Zhan Chunpei has experienced more than 20 major search and rescue missions at sea, including the search of Malaysia Airlines' lost passenger plane MH370, and the emergency disposal of the "Sangji" ship's combustion and explosion. From a "rookie" who became seasick at a flash, she has grown into a female captain who must achieve the mission of chopping waves.

After ten years of honing a "ship", the "Haixun 01" and Zhan Chunpei witnessed each other's "track" of growth, and jointly sailed through the course of China's maritime industry's continuous high-quality development.

"If you don't try, how can you know if it will work?"

In 2013, Zhan Chunpei passed the national civil servant examination and entered Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration. In that year, the cruise rescue ship "Haixun 01" with the largest maritime system, the most advanced equipment and the strongest comprehensive capability was organized. From the very beginning of his journey, Zhan Chunpei was interested in boarding the ship, so the story of the two "recruits" was destined to meet from then on.

In March 2014, the loss of Malaysia Airlines MH370 touched the hearts of people all over the country. "Haixun 01", as the command ship of the Chinese fleet, went to the South Indian Ocean to carry out a large-scale maritime search. The task is arduous, the voyage is long, and the search time is long. The search team urgently needs human resources. Zhan Chunpei volunteered to join the search task team of Malaysia Airlines as the third officer on probation.

Zhan Chunpei, who had never experienced ocean sailing before, did not expect that the first "roadblock" would be so fierce. "At the beginning of a day of seasickness, I could vomit nine times and ten times". In order to overcome this problem, she often stuck to the bridge that shook the most, and mastered a variety of ways to alleviate seasickness, and soon overcame seasickness. "Now, the level eight storm cannot affect my duty and life," she said.

The various tests in different stages of growth have never been gentle because she is a girl. "At the beginning of the second mate's shift from zero to four in the morning, his biological clock was in a mess. Even when he was on leave, he was energetic at night and could sleep anywhere during the day." In addition to ship handling, the third mate checked the fire-fighting and life-saving equipment, the second mate changed the chart, made the voyage plan, and managed the instruments and equipment, and the first mate managed the entire deck department. Zhan Chunpei never slackened off.

As one of the few women in this industry, Zhan Chunpei has heard many voices of doubt. "It's not navigation that restricts women, it's ideas." The longer she works, the more convinced she is of this point. "How can I know if I can do it without trying?"

"More efforts, more opportunities"

At one time, Zhan Chunpei thought that the sea search and rescue was to save people from fire and water at a critical moment in the fierce wind and waves. Later, she found that this was just one side of the search and rescue, and the other side of the sea was grinding, that is, facing the vast sea, there was no trace to find, no one to see in life, no body to see in death. "But every time we make an extra effort, there will be more opportunities for those in distress."

At the end of 2015, the fishing boat "Su Gan Yu Yun 02886" turned over at sea, and 9 people on board were missing. At that time, Zhan Chunpei, as the third mate, controlled the ship on the bridge and assisted the captain in conducting on-site command and coordination. "The first detection did not find any signs of life. When we were about to withdraw, we were worried. The boatswain took the risk to jump on the bottom of the flipped boat and repeatedly knocked on the bottom of the boat for inspection, and finally heard the response of the survivors!" Thinking of the scene at that time, Zhan Chunpei was still excited. "Through the unremitting efforts of all parties, the survivors were finally rescued from the 36 hour flipped fishing boat." This search and rescue, as a member of the first-line search and rescue command team, gave her a deeper understanding of "responsibility".

On the evening of January 6, 2018, the "Sangji" ship caught fire after collision in the East China Sea, and was loaded with 110000 tons of flammable and explosive condensate. Zhan Chunpei received instructions late at night during his vacation, and urgently returned to the ship to set sail. At the scene, the fire was blazing and exploding from time to time, and the air was filled with toxic smoke after the burning of condensate. Zhan Chunpei was the second officer at that time. She recalled: "The 'Haixun 01' was a command ship on the scene. It was necessary to save people, control the fire, and monitor the oil spill on the scene. This was a great challenge for us, not only to ensure the safety of the ship itself, but also to coordinate 32 domestic and foreign water and air rescue forces." Zhan Chunpei learned calm analysis and Calm down and grow quickly.

"Don't forget your team"

In 2020, Zhan Chunpei served as the chief mate and became the head of the deck department. In the same year, the model worker innovation studio led by her was established in the "Haixun 01" round.

"Don't forget your team! If you have any task, think of where the team is at the first time!" This is what Jiang Long, Zhan Chunpei's master and the first captain of "Haixun 01", told her. After 10 years of close cooperation with the team, Zhan Chunpei was deeply impressed by this sentence: "If every crew member completes their job responsibilities, we can ensure the safety of the ship; if each studio member is responsible for a professional field, we can achieve the long board effect and play a greater role in the field of offshore search and rescue law enforcement. As a leader, I hope to give full play to the advantages of women's flexible law enforcement and management to enhance the cohesion of the team. "

Since the establishment of the studio, Zhan Chunpei has adhered to the problem oriented approach and led the research and innovation work. Under her leadership, the members of the studio have gone through many job trainings. Some went to the UK to work as the junior technical officer of the International Maritime Organization, and some worked as maritime investigators, crew examination assessors, and ship security inspectors. In 2023, Zhan Chunpei's Model Worker Innovation Studio was named the 12th batch of Shanghai Model Worker Innovation Studios.

"Ten years ago, I chose to sail. It's a dream to be a captain. Now, a captain is not only an identity, honor, but also a responsibility and responsibility." As a striver in the new era, Zhan Chunpei led the team to fight in the front line of safeguarding national maritime rights and interests and ensuring the safety of life at sea.
