Send Meng Haoran to Guangling from Yellow Crane Tower

Dynasty: Tang Dynasty

Author: Li Bai

Original text:

My old friend said goodbye to the Yellow Crane Tower in the west, and fireworks went down to Yangzhou in March.
The lone sail is far away and its shadow is clear in the blue sky. Only the Yangtze River flows in the sky.

translation
My old friend waved to me again and again, said goodbye to the Yellow Crane Tower, and went on a long trip to Yangzhou in the sunny March when the willow catkins were like smoke and flowers were like flowers.
The shadow of the friend's solitary boat gradually disappeared at the end of the blue sky, only to see a line of the Yangtze River running towards the remote sky.

appreciation

This farewell poem has its special emotional tone. It is different from the kind of hearty departure of young people in Wang Bo's "Farewell Du to Shuchuan", and also different from the kind of thoughtful departure in Wang Wei's "Weicheng Song". This poem shows a poetic departure. The reason why this is so is because it is the departure of two romantic poets. It is also because this departure is connected with a prosperous era, prosperous season, and prosperous region. The happy departure also carries the yearning of the poet Li Bai, which makes this departure incomparable poetic.

Li Bai's contact with Meng Haoran was not long after he left Sichuan. When he was young and happy, the world in his eyes was almost as beautiful as gold. Meng Haoran, more than ten years older than Li Bai, was already famous for his poems. He gave Li Bai the impression that he was intoxicated with the mountains and rivers, free and happy. So Li Bai said in his poem "To Meng Haoran", "I love Master Meng, and I am romantic. The red beauty abandoned the Xuan crown, and the white head lay on the pine clouds." This departure was just the beginning of the prosperous era, peaceful and prosperous. The season was the third month of smoke and flowers, and the spring was the strongest. From the Yellow Crane Tower down the Yangtze River, All the way was full of flowers. Li Bai is such a romantic and travel loving person, so this departure was entirely in the atmosphere of rich imaginations and lyrics. Li Bai was not sad or unhappy. On the contrary, he thought Meng Haoran was very happy on this trip. He longed for both Yangzhou and Meng Haoran, so as he said goodbye, his heart also flew with him, and there was endless poetry in his chest rippling with the river. Seeing off friends in the beautiful scenery is really a different experience in my heart. The beautiful scenery is pleasing to the eyes, but the farewell is sad. Seeing the feelings in the scenery is implicit and profound, like an off line voice, to achieve the artistic effect of making people fascinated and wandering.

The phrase "Farewell to the Yellow Crane Tower in the West" is not only for the purpose of the topic, but also because the Yellow Crane Tower is a world famous scenic spot, which may be the place where the two poets often linger and meet. Therefore, the mention of the Yellow Crane Tower brings out various poetic life contents related to this place. The Yellow Crane Tower itself is also the place where the legendary immortals fly to the sky. This is also a kind of association with Li Bai's idea of Meng Haoran's happy trip to Guangling, which adds the atmosphere of happy and imaginative music.

"Fireworks come to Yangzhou in March", and the word "fireworks" is added to "March" to paint the poetic atmosphere in the farewell environment particularly strong. Fireworks are misty and colorful. The feeling for readers is not a piece of land or a flower, but an endless and impenetrable view of sunny spring smoke. March is the time of fireworks, and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, which was prosperous in the Kaiyuan era, is the place of fireworks. "Fireworks in March" not only reappears the charming scenery of the late spring and prosperous place, but also reveals the atmosphere of the times. This sentence has a beautiful artistic conception and beautiful writing. Sun Zhu of the Qing Dynasty praised it as "a beautiful sentence for thousands of years". Li Bai is eager to go to Yangzhou.

The last two lines of the poem seem to describe the scenery, but they contain a poetic detail. Li Bai has been sending his friends on the boat. The boat has already set sail, while he is still watching the sails go by the river. Li Bai's eyes looked at the shadow of the sail, and he always saw that the shadow of the sail gradually blurred and disappeared at the end of the blue sky, which showed the length of watching. The shadow of the sail has disappeared, but Li Bai is still looking up, and then he notices that a river of spring water is flowing to the far water sky junction.

"Only the Yangtze River flows across the sky" is the scene in front of us, not just the scenery. Li Bai's deep affection for his friends and his yearning are reflected in this poetic attention. The poet's mood rises and falls like a river flowing eastward. In a word, the departure of the two poets, who were very poetic and elegant, was also a yearning departure for Li Bai. The poets used the gorgeous scenery of spring and March to show the wide picture of setting boats on the Yangtze River and the details of watching the lone sail far away.
