Austria's Dual Passport Program Triggered Diplomatic Disturbance with Italy

2018-09-21 10:41:36 China News Network

Chinanews, September 21 (Reuters) According to the European Union News Agency quoted by the European Network, recently, Vienna, Austria plans to issue Austrian passports to residents living in South Tyrol, Italy, which caused strong dissatisfaction from the Roman government. In response, Italian Foreign Minister Milanesi even announced to cancel the meeting with Austrian Foreign Minister.

It is reported that the Italian Ministry of the Interior criticized Vienna. As the current rotating presidency of the European Union, Austria should not promote such an unusual project that may cause conflicts between countries. Fracaro, Minister of Parliamentary Relations and Direct Democracy of the Italian Government, accused Vienna of carrying out polarization propaganda before the local elections in South Tyrol.

At the beginning of September, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it was said that the relevant departments in Vienna had begun to plan to provide the residents of the northern Italian province of South Tyrol with the legal text of Austrian nationality. Austrian Prime Minister Kurtz said in Rome that many South Tyroleans would like to have dual nationality. Italy need not be so excited, and pointed out that there is no bill on dual nationality. If there is, the two countries will coordinate.

It is reported that after the Austrian right-wing government came to power at the end of 2017, the dual nationality of South Tyrol has been included in the government plan.

The northern Italian province of South Tyrol is close to the Austrian border city of Innsbruck, where 70% of the population is native to German. Before the end of World War I, the Austro Hungarian Empire owned the Alps region, which was later transferred to Italy according to the post-war agreement. In history, Italy and Austria have had many disputes over the subordination of the region. (Jing Ying)
