Every time the grapes come into the market, there will always be some rumors coming into public view again. Recently, a video of two years ago was widely forwarded on the Internet. In the video, a fruit grower said that his "seedless grapes" used contraceptives, which could lead to infertility in adulthood. What is the truth?

Most of the fruits we eat are formed by the enlargement of ovary after the pistil is pollinated and fertilized, and the enlargement of ovary depends on the development of ovule. In other words, if the ovule cannot develop into a seed smoothly, the ovary cannot form a fruit. According to this theory, if there is no seed, there will be no fruit. So how does seedless fruit come from?

In agricultural production, as long as the goal of "controlling seed development and providing sufficient plant hormones" is achieved, seedless fruits can be obtained. There are three ways to achieve this goal: first, spraying a certain amount of plant hormones on the fruits externally to inhibit seed maturation while promoting fruit development; Second, haploid plants were obtained by hybridization, so that the plant itself could not produce seeds, and at the same time, exogenous plant hormones were sprayed to promote fruit development; Third, look for plant mutants whose seeds are sterile but can produce hormones by themselves to produce seedless fruits.

Among the common fruits, "Seedless Giant Peak" is produced by the first method. Kyoho grape itself has seeds, but spraying a certain concentration of gibberellin at full bloom and young fruit stage can inhibit seed development, promote fruit expansion, and obtain seedless Kyoho grape.

The seedless watermelon is crossed to form triploid through the second way, and cannot undergo normal meiosis and fertilization, so it will not form normal seeds. When the pollen of diploid watermelon is used for pollination, the body of triploid watermelon can synthesize auxin, so seedless watermelon is obtained.

Banana is also a natural triploid, and its principle is similar to that of seedless watermelon. Another category of seedless citrus and some seedless grape varieties, such as "Jingkejing" and "Dalihong seedless", were obtained through the third category. This kind of fruit forms a natural mutant during its growth. After pollination, the fertilized embryo sac of the mutant plant stops developing soon, but the fruit itself can produce hormones to obtain seedless fruit.

Some consumers are worried about the harmful effects of plant hormones on human body, but they don't need to. In short, plant hormones and animal hormones are totally different, and their chemical structures, mechanisms of action and recognition receptors are completely different. Animal hormones cannot be recognized and worked by plants, and plant hormones will not have any effect in animals. Moreover, both natural plant hormones and synthetic plant hormones are harmless to human body at the daily diet dose, and will be discharged quickly with metabolism, without residual and cumulative effects, so you can eat them with confidence.
