The heavy snow stopped slightly.
The snow inside and outside the wall can sink people's calves.
Two guards with arbiter rifles pressed four prisoners of war in rags and urged them to build a mound on the open ground on the north side of the wall.
They sealed branches, dead leaves, licorice and other things inside the mound, leaving only a small hole at the top and bottom, and then lit a fire.
The fire gradually ignited, burning from the bottom up, and soon smoke billowed.
