The desert areas are sparsely populated and lack of road building materials, so the main materials needed, such as soil, gravel, cement, asphalt and steel, need to be transported far away. In order to reduce the project cost, the subgrade filling is mainly wind blown sand based on the principle of local materials. According to the physical and mechanical properties of aeolian sand and the practical results, the aeolian sand subgrade has the advantages of good overall stability, small settlement, fast settlement speed, good water stability, etc., but the aeolian sand is loose under natural conditions, the cohesion is almost zero, and the shear resistance is extremely poor. It is difficult for ordinary machines and tools to drive, and ordinary steel wheel rollers cannot roll to the specified compactness. At the same time, due to the special climate and geological conditions in desert areas, the construction of desert roads is much more difficult than that under general climate and geological conditions. In combination with the construction of Tieganrik Ruoqiang desert highway of National Highway 218, this paper introduces the mechanical selection, wet compaction method and construction precautions for the construction of aeolian sand subgrade.
