Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. The simplest brass is a copper zinc binary alloy, which is called simple brass or ordinary brass. Brasss with different mechanical properties can be obtained by changing the content of zinc in brass. The higher the content of zinc in brass, the higher its strength and slightly lower its plasticity. The zinc content of brass used in industry does not exceed 45%. The higher the zinc content, the brittleness will occur and the alloy performance will deteriorate.
In order to improve some properties of brass, the brass with other alloy elements added on the basis of single brass is called special brass. Common alloy elements include silicon, aluminum, tin, lead, manganese, iron and nickel. Adding aluminum to brass can improve its yield strength and corrosion resistance, and slightly reduce its plasticity. Brass containing less than 4% aluminum has good processing, casting and other comprehensive properties. Adding 1% tin to brass can significantly improve its corrosion resistance to seawater and marine atmosphere, so it is called "naval brass". Tin can also improve the machinability of brass. The main purpose of adding lead to brass is to improve the machinability and wear resistance. Lead has little effect on the strength of brass. Manganese brass has good mechanical properties, thermal stability and corrosion resistance; Adding aluminum to manganese brass can also improve its properties and obtain castings with smooth surface. Bronze is the earliest alloy used in history, originally referring to copper tin alloy. It is called bronze because of its bluish gray color. In order to improve the technological and mechanical properties of the alloy, most bronzes also add other alloy elements, such as lead, zinc, phosphorus, etc. As tin is a scarce element, many tin free Wuxi bronzes are also used in industry. They are not only cheap, but also have the special properties required. Wuxi bronze mainly includes aluminum bronze, beryllium bronze, manganese bronze, silicon bronze, etc. In addition, there are ternary or quaternary bronzes with complex compositions. Copper alloys other than brass and white copper (copper nickel alloy) are now called bronze.
Tin bronze has higher mechanical properties, better corrosion resistance, friction reduction and good casting performance; Small sensitivity to overheating and gas, good welding performance, no ferromagnetism, small shrinkage coefficient. The corrosion resistance of tin bronze in atmosphere, seawater, fresh water and steam is higher than that of brass. Aluminum bronze has higher mechanical properties than tin bronze, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, cold resistance, heat resistance, no ferromagnetism, good fluidity, no segregation tendency, and dense castings can be obtained. The properties of aluminum bronze can be further improved by adding iron, nickel and manganese.
Bronze is also divided into pressure processing and casting products.
After solution aging treatment, it has high strength, hardness, elastic limit and fatigue limit, small elastic hysteresis, and corrosion resistance (corrosion resistance rate of beryllium bronze alloy in seawater: (1.1-1.4) × 10-2mm/year). Corrosion depth: (10.9-13.8) × 10-3mm/year.) After corrosion, the strength and elongation of beryllium bronze alloy do not change, so it can remain in the water for more than 40 years. In sulfuric acid medium: the annual corrosion depth of beryllium bronze in sulfuric acid with concentration less than 80% (room temperature) is 0.0012-0.1175mm, and the corrosion is slightly accelerated when the concentration is more than 80%.
Characteristics of beryllium bronze: wear resistance, low temperature resistance, non-magnetic, high conductivity, impact and spark free.
