GKN's two speed eAxle technology was awarded the American Automobile News PACE Award, which was applied to the new BMW i8 super hybrid sports car.

The innovative eAxle technology can improve the acceleration performance of the electric transmission, increase the maximum speed limit and the driving range in pure electric mode, while optimizing the driving performance and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. This is the first technology that can improve vehicle performance through electricity in the whole speed range. Prior to this, electric and split axle hybrid vehicles both used single speed transmission, which would disconnect when reaching the critical speed to prevent the motor from rotating too fast.
