China Environment News reporter Zhou Yingjiu correspondent Wang Jinhui Shijiazhuang reported that Hebei Province recently released the Hebei Island Protection Plan (2012-2020), which proposed that by 2020, the ecosystem of important islands in Hebei Province should be effectively protected, and the treatment rate of wastewater and solid waste generated by the development and utilization of islands should reach 100%.

It is understood that there are 14 islands in the sea area under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province, all of which are uninhabited islands. The land area of the islands is 3634.75 hectares, with 487 kilometers of coastline and more than 7000 square kilometers of sea area under the jurisdiction.

At present, the island development and utilization activities in Hebei Province are mainly concentrated on the islands with good resource and environmental conditions and typical ecosystem development. In the process of developing and utilizing islands, there are problems such as low level of tourism development, serious homogenization, extensive development and utilization of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, low efficiency, low degree of comprehensive utilization of island resources, and low level of intensive and economical utilization.

According to the plan, Hebei Province will arrange key island protection projects according to the island location, resources, environment and other conditions to promote the intensive and economical use of island resources.

By 2020, Hebei Province will build one Luanhe River Estuary Wetland Marine Special Reserve (Marine Park), and the total number of reserves involving islands will reach two. The number of islands in the reserve will account for more than 40% of the total number of islands in the province.

At the same time, Hebei Province has also issued the 2013 Implementation Plan for Marine Environment Monitoring in Hebei Province, which will focus on strengthening the monitoring of marine disasters and environmental pollution emergencies, mastering the main environmental risks in key sea areas of Hebei Province, and maintaining the ecological security of sea areas.
