Domestic ECS servers are generally configured with 40G (Alibaba Cloud) and 50G (Tencent Cloud) cloud disks, which are the default standard cloud disk capacity. In terms of building a website, is 40G enough? Do you need to add additional data disks? Many new users have questions about this, and Lao Wei specially wrote an article to explain it.

Server operating system space occupation

The operating system for building ECS stations is generally divided into Windows system and Linux system.

1. Windows system

Currently, win2012 server and win2016 server are popular. As we all know, Windows occupies a large space, which exceeds 32G. Therefore, the default system disk is not enough. To build a station, you need to add an additional data disk. The Windows system is not enough on the system disk alone.

2. Linux system

The commonly used Linux system occupies less than 2G. In addition to the environment panels and website programs installed by users themselves, it will not exceed 5G at the initial stage of building the site. The future capacity depends on how much space is occupied by pictures and videos on the website.

For example, if there are 100k images of an ordinary website that have not been optimized, and 10000 images are about 10G, the default system disk will be enough for several years. And it is impossible to send many articles and pictures every day, so it can take three years and five years. In addition, it is now recommended that videos and pictures that occupy a large amount of hard disk space be placed in object storage (another host space) instead of occupying system disk space.

Generally speaking, the default 40G system disk of the website server using the Linux system can meet the needs of the website space, and there is generally no need to add additional data disks. In consideration of data security, some users do not put website programs and data on the system disk, but attach additional data disks.

3. Some photography websites and art display websites have a lot of pictures, which are compressed and optimized before uploading. On average, more than 20% of the space can be saved without significantly reducing the image quality. If the frequency and number of posts are not very large, and most websites can't post pictures regularly, then you can completely ignore the space occupation of cloud disk. Many websites can't post so many articles and pictures at all. If the space occupied after optimization is still large, you need to use object storage or add additional data disks to solve this problem with less money.
