Rivers and environment

FLOW-3D HYDRO can be used as an advanced modeling tool for 3D non hydrostatic modeling functions requiring higher accuracy and model resolution. Typical modeling applications involve small dams or infrastructure, transport hydraulics, complex three-dimensional river hydrodynamics, thermal buoyancy plumes, outfalls, and pollutant transport. A key feature of FLOW-3D HYDRO is that the shallow water model can be dynamically linked with the full 3D model. This function allows users to expand the model area of multi-scale modeling applications to maximize the calculation efficiency and required model resolution. FLOW-3D HYDRO also includes additional features and advanced physical models specifically for river and environmental applications.

Dams and Spillways

Hydropower projects are very sensitive to three-dimensional flow effects, and it is very important to accurately predict flow patterns to maximize efficiency. FLOW-3D HYDRO is an industry leader in the field of free surface flow modeling, and is used by dam professionals to solve a wide range of design problems of existing and proposed projects. With the most advanced free surface flow modeling, excellent accuracy and ease of use, as well as the seamless integration of our solutions and high-performance computing platforms, FLOW-3D HYDRO natural modeling advantages are most suitable for dams and spillways. From the simplest ogee to the most complex geometric structure, every element of the dam and its surrounding infrastructure is an ideal candidate for FLOW-3D HYDRO modeling. Common challenges addressed by FLOW-3D HYDRO include improving the flow efficiency and distribution of the intake and spillway, conducting complex environmental impact assessments of the dam, and designing and optimizing fishways.

Port and Coast

Port, coastal and marine engineering has complex and challenging applications, ranging from the redevelopment of major ports to coastal defense, to environmental analysis. Engineers working in these applications must solve highly complex and interactive problems involving waves, structures, erosion, aeration, and variable density flows. With its advanced focused water model and TruVOF free surface tracking method, FLOW-3D HYDRO provides a unique function for analyzing these complex scenes, allowing engineers to model large amplitude nonlinear wave propagation on complex terrain and coastal structures. FLOW-3D HYDRO is an ideal tool for analyzing the interaction performance of complex waves and structures, such as hydrodynamic loads on coastal infrastructure, wave propagation, overtopping, floating structure dynamics and coastal outfall transportation.

water treatment

Water and wastewater recovery facilities provide a unique set of modeling challenges. The head loss and detailed velocity field are important modeling results for the water transferred through the treatment plant, including the mixing, diversion, free surface and pressurized pipe flow conditions of the diverter. Other process modeling challenges include aeration, hindered sedimentation, chemical reactions, and impeller movement. FLOW-3D HYDRA's advanced auxiliary model allows modelers to go beyond the scope of flow hydraulics. There are special models for desanding, chlorine contact tank, sludge sedimentation and aeration, and users can flexibly choose the complexity of their modeling work. With TruVOF, FLOW-3D HYDRA can seamlessly handle a range of free surface pressurized flow conditions.

Transport infrastructure

The flow in and around the city provides some of the most exciting and challenging applications for CFD modelers. Hydraulics in these applications provide infinitely variable free surface and pressure flow conditions, sometimes extreme turbulence and energy flow may occur, in which consideration of gas phase, aeration and volume expansion, or gravel and sediment transport is equally important. FLOW-3D HYDRO has a long history of providing very accurate flow, which allows modelers to use many advanced modeling functions to further capture gas and gravel factors. FLOW-3D HYDRO provides advanced transportation infrastructure research, including hydraulic control structure, drop structure, diversion device, energy dissipater, pump station, CSOs, sewer and wet tunnel design.
