ARM announced the mbed OS, an operating system for low-power devices in the Internet of Things. Some of the mbed OS is open source, and the rest is controlled by ARM. The reason is to ensure that the operating system will not be fragmented. ARM claims that mbed OS only needs 256kb of memory. It hopes developers can use mbed to develop devices with battery life of several years.
Mbed OS will be provided to all manufacturers for free.
In the field of Internet of Things, mbed is facing challenges from multiple competitors, such as Predix of General Electric, Tizen of Samsung, and Nest Labs, which use proprietary software based on Linux, may switch to Android in the future after being acquired by Google.
