This year's Olympus Challenge includes two directions: One is the storage technology with extreme cost performance per bit, and the other is the new data base for AI era

Two Olympus Awards will be set up for the millions of Olympus puzzles, one for each puzzle direction. If a puzzle direction award is vacant, 1-2 Olympus Pioneer Awards will be added. The prize of Olympus Award is 1 million yuan/piece, and the prize of Olympus Pioneer Award is 500000 yuan/piece , aiming to attract the world's top scientific talents to explore the cutting-edge technology in the field of data storage.

It is understood that since 2019, Huawei has released the "Olympus Problem", which is a million hanging red, every year. The goal is to lead the basic theoretical research direction in the field of global data storage, break through key technical problems, accelerate the industrialization of scientific research achievements, and achieve win-win cooperation between industry, university and research. At present, four issues of "Olympus Red" have been released, attracting more than 240 scholars from 49 universities around the world.

Last year, the Torsten Hoefler professor team of Zurich Federal Institute of Technology and the allergy professor team of Shanghai Jiaotong University won the 2023 Olympus Award. The team of You Yang, a professor from the National University of Singapore, John Kim, a professor from the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, Yang Tong, a teacher from Peking University, and Wang Ying, a teacher from the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, won the Olympus Pioneer Award in 2023.

Zhou Yuefeng, president of Huawei's data storage product line, said that data storage with extreme performance, data toughness, new data paradigm, high scalability, green energy saving, and data weaving capabilities is the only way for the evolution of storage in the AI era and requires the joint participation of all sectors.


The recently released National Data Resources Survey Report (2023) shows that in 2023, the national total data production will reach 32.85ZB (Zebyte), an increase of 22.44% year on year.

In terms of data storage, in 2023, China's total cumulative data storage volume will be 1.73ZB (Zebyte), and the utilization rate of storage space will be 59%, of which the utilization rate of government and industry key enterprises' storage space will be about 70%. Among the above stored data, data cloud storage accounts for more than 40%.

In terms of computing power, by the end of 2023, the computing power scale of more than 2200 computing power centers nationwide will increase by about 30% year on year. The demand for computing power in large model training is soaring, and the demand for computing power in science, government, finance, industry and other industries is increasing.

The report also points out that the management and utilization of data resources in China is still in its infancy, and there are still challenges such as insufficient effective supply of data, moderately advanced layout of computing power, improvement of data diversified circulation mode, and further release of data value.
