Ubuntu 24.04 LTS has been officially launched release , code "Noble Numbat".

Mark Shuttleworth, CEO of Canonical, said that Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will provide support for at least 12 years, and improve significantly in performance engineering and confidential computing. It also integrates the version of Java NET and the latest Rust tool chain.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS includes a number of new features, including an improved Ubuntu desktop installer, new ZFS and TPM support.

The new version uses the Linux 6.8 kernel. Netplan can be used to configure network connections on the desktop. It is also equipped with a modern desktop operating system installer. It also brings a new version of Ubuntu fonts, various performance optimizations, and a large number of new functions.

In addition, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is also equipped with a new graphical firmware update tool called Firmware Updater, native support for Raspberry Pi 5, Netplan 1.0 for the most advanced network management, and the default snap function Mozilla Thunderbird.

  • Pre enabled and preloaded performance engineering tools

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS uses the latest Linux 6.8 kernel, with improved system call performance, nested KVM support on ppc64el, and support for the new bcachefs file system. In addition to upstream improvements, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will also Low latency kernel function Incorporated into the default kernel to reduce the kernel task scheduling delay.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS also enables frame pointers on all 64 bit architectures by default, so that performance engineers can access accurate and complete flame maps at any time when analyzing the system for troubleshooting and optimization.

Brendan Gregg, an Intel computer performance expert and researcher, said, "Frame pointers can be used for more complete CPU analysis and off CPU analysis. The performance advantages they can provide far outweigh relatively small performance losses. Ubuntu's default enabling of frame pointers has greatly improved performance engineering and the default developer experience."

Using bpftrace for tracking has now become the standard configuration in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. In addition, there are preloaded analysis tools that allow site reliability engineers to access important resources immediately.

  • Tool chain for improving developer efficiency

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS includes Python 3.12, Ruby 3.2, PHP 8.3 and Go 1.22, with special attention NET, Java and Rust.

With NET 8, Ubuntu is supporting NET community has taken an important step forward. NET 8 will be fully supported throughout the lifecycle of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 22.04 LTS, enabling developers to upgrade their applications to newer versions before upgrading Ubuntu NET version. This NET support has also been extended to the IBM System Z platform.

For Java developers, OpenJDK 21 is the default version in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, while maintaining support for versions 17, 11, and 8. OpenJDK 17 and 21 are also TCK certified, which means they comply with Java standards and ensure interoperability with other Java platforms. Ubuntu Pro users can also use special OpenJDK 11 packages that are FIPS compliant.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS comes with Rust 1.75 and a simpler Rust toolchain snap framework. This will support the kernel and Firefox and other key Ubuntu software packages to increasingly use Rust, and enable future versions of Rust to be delivered to developers on 24.04 LTS.

  • New management tool for Ubuntu desktop and WSL

Ubuntu Desktop now uses the same installer technology as Ubuntu Server in LTS for the first time. Therefore, desktop administrators can now use image customization tools such as automatic installation and cloud init to create customized experiences for their developers. In addition, the user interface has also been restructured, adopting the modern design built by Flutter.

For users who manage Windows and Ubuntu mixed environments, the Active Directory Group Policy client provided through Ubuntu Pro now supports enterprise agent configuration, permission management, and remote script execution.

Canonical said that it would continue to invest resources in the development of Ubuntu on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), which has been regarded internally as a first-class platform for developers and data scientists. Since Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Ubuntu on WSL now supports cloud init to realize image customization and standardization across developer domains.
