IT Home On May 21, it was reported that in 2021, Volvo announced to cooperate with the autonomous start-up Aurora, Today, the first "mass production" self driving truck jointly manufactured by both parties has finally hatched and landed.
Based on Volvo's new VNL, this truck is an 8-level semi-trailer truck specially built for long-distance transportation. The automatic driving version of the truck is equipped with a series of sensors and cameras, and Aurora's Level 4 automatic driving solution enables the truck to run without driving.
Nils Jaeger, president of Volvo Auto Drive Solutions, said in a statement:
This truck is the first truck of our standardized global automatic driving technology platform. It will enable us to launch more models in the future and bring automatic driving technology into all truck brands of Volvo Group as well as other regions and use cases.
Note from IT Home: According to the total weight of vehicles, the North American commercial vehicle (truck) classification standard divides commercial trucks into three categories and eight levels, including Level 1-3 for light trucks, Level 4-6 for medium trucks, and Level 7-8 for heavy trucks.
On the level 8 heavy trucks, Volvo's market share is about 10%. The two companies have tested their technology on public roads, and Aurora has driven 1.5 million miles on commercial roads.
Aurora said that it plans to deploy 20 fully autonomous trucks this year, and aims to expand to about 100 trucks by 2025, which will eventually be sold to other companies. The company also cooperates with Continental, a German auto supplier, and plans to deploy large scale driverless trucks in 2027.
