Microsoft open source MS-DOS version 1.25, 2.0

IT Home On September 30, Microsoft opened the MS-DOS 1.25 and 2.0 source codes through the Computer History Museum in March 2014. On the 28th, Microsoft officially released a blog, announcing again that it will open source on GitHub. Microsoft said that compared with the original downloadable compressed archive file, the code is easier to find, read and reference in the GitHub repository.

Microsoft stated in the document that, The (re) release of these source codes can be used as a historical reference, and can also be used for exploration and experiment by people interested in early PC operating systems; The source code will remain static, so please do not send any Pull Requests for modification.

Microsoft also mentioned some key points, which are sorted out by IT Home as follows:

  • All source codes of MS-DOS 1.25 and 2.0 are written with 8086 assembly code.

  • The source code of the initial version of 86-DOS can be traced back to December 29, 1980.

  • The MS-DOS 1.25 code is dated around May 9, 1983. It only contains seven source files, including the original MS-DOS command line shell - COMMAND ASM。

  • MS-DOS 2.0 can be traced back to about August 3, 1983, and has a considerable increase in complexity (and team size), including 100 ASM files.

  • The source and target files are interspersed with some interesting TXT and DOC files.
