Difference between MLCC ceramic capacitor and ordinary capacitor

Date: March 8, 2024 (Source: Internet)

MLCC (multilayer ceramic capacitor) and ordinary capacitor are two common types of capacitors in electronic components. Although they are used to store charge and generate electric field, they have some differences in structure, materials, properties and applications. Next, I will analyze the difference between MLCC ceramic capacitors and ordinary capacitors in detail.

1、 Structure and materials:

1. MLCC ceramic capacitor:

MLCC capacitor consists of multilayer ceramic chips and electrodes. Ceramic chips are thin sheets made of ceramic materials (such as iron dioxide, barium titanate, etc.), which are laminated and sintered to form a multilayer structure. The electrode is usually silver or copper conductor material. Ceramic materials have high dielectric constant and low loss, which can provide high capacitance density.

2. Common capacitor:

Ordinary capacitors usually consist of an insulating layer (such as polyethylene film) between two conductor plates (such as aluminum foil). An electric field is formed between the conductor plate and the insulating layer, and the thickness of the insulating layer determines the capacitance of the capacitor. Common common capacitor types include CY7C1061AV33-10ZXC Aluminum electrolytic capacitor, tantalum electrolytic capacitor and polyester capacitor, etc.

2、 Capacity range:

1. MLCC ceramic capacitor:

MLCC capacitors have a wide range of capacities, ranging from a few pics to hundreds of microfacies. Because of its multilayer structure, the capacitance can be increased by increasing the number of layers.

2. Common capacitor:

The capacity range of ordinary capacitors is relatively small, usually between a few pics and a few milliliters. The capacity value is mainly determined by the area and thickness of the insulation layer.

3、 Operating voltage:

1. MLCC ceramic capacitor:

MLCC capacitors usually have a low operating voltage range, from a few volts to several hundred volts. The manufacture of high-voltage capacitors is more complicated and the cost is higher.

2. Common capacitor:

Ordinary capacitors can have a high operating voltage range, ranging from several volts to several thousand volts. Different types of capacitors have different working voltage levels.

4、 Temperature characteristics:

1. MLCC ceramic capacitor:

MLCC capacitor has good stability and low temperature drift when the temperature changes. They usually have low temperature coefficients and are suitable for applications sensitive to temperature changes.

2. Common capacitor:

The common capacitor may show large capacity change and temperature coefficient when the temperature changes. Different capacitor types have different temperature characteristics.

5、 Frequency characteristics:

1. MLCC ceramic capacitor:

MLCC capacitors show good performance at high frequencies, with low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and equivalent series inductance (ESL). This makes them more efficient and stable in high-frequency circuits and RF applications.

2. Common capacitor:

The frequency characteristics of ordinary capacitors may be affected by factors such as electrolyte, insulating materials and external circuits. They may exhibit high ESR and ESL at high frequencies.

6、 Application field:

1. MLCC ceramic capacitor:

MLCC capacitors are commonly used in high-frequency circuits, RF applications, power filtering and coupling in electronic products. They are small in size, light in weight and stable in performance.

2. Common capacitor:

Common capacitors are commonly used in electronic products and circuits for DC filtering, energy storage and coupling. Different types of capacitors are suitable for different application scenarios, such as aluminum electrolytic capacitors for low-frequency applications, and tantalum capacitors for high-frequency applications.

Summary:

MLCC ceramic capacitors and ordinary capacitors have some differences in structure, materials, capacity range, operating voltage, temperature characteristics, frequency characteristics and application fields. MLCC ceramic capacitors have multilayer ceramic chip and electrode structures, high capacitance density, low temperature coefficient and excellent frequency characteristics, which are suitable for high-frequency circuits and RF applications. Ordinary capacitors are mainly composed of conductor plates and insulating layers, which are suitable for DC filtering and low-frequency applications. According to the specific application requirements and performance requirements, selecting the appropriate capacitor type can ensure the normal operation and performance optimization of the circuit.
