Study every day "Dunhuang, I am longing for it."

In the 1980s, when Xi Jinping visited Gansu, he failed to visit Dunhuang on the spot due to time constraints and other factors, which became his regret for many years.

On August 19, 2019, just after the first autumn festival, General Secretary Xi Jinping came to Mogao Grottoes as the first stop of his investigation in Gansu Province. He said that this trip realized a long cherished wish.

At the foot of Mingsha Mountain, beside Dangquan River and in the nine storey building, the General Secretary left his footprints.

Entering the cave, General Secretary Zai carefully observed the time-honored colored sculptures and murals. At Cave 323, the General Secretary looked at a mural on the north wall and pointed out that "this is Zhang Qian".

Mogao Grottoes, a world cultural heritage, is located in Dunhuang, Jiuquan, Gansu Province.

Fan Jinshi, honorary president of the Dunhuang Research Institute, recalled that although it was the first time to enter the Mogao Grottoes, "the general secretary's understanding of Dunhuang culture and attention to cultural relics left a deep impression on everyone".

This understanding and emphasis are due to the "yearning" of freedom for a long time.

From Mogao Grottoes, the General Secretary came to the Dunhuang Research Institute to have a discussion with relevant experts, scholars and representatives of cultural units. After Fan Jinshi's speech, the General Secretary immediately asked: "Are tourists overloaded at present? What is the overload situation?" "What are the impacts of natural disasters you said?" "There has been much rain in Dunhuang in recent years?"

Fan Jinshi, who has been rooted in Dunhuang for most of his life, sighed: "What he cares about is the most critical problem facing Dunhuang at present."

Temperature and humidity changes caused by climate change will accelerate the disease process of grotto murals, while short-term extreme weather such as sudden rainstorm may cause destructive damage to cultural relics.

As the General Secretary saw during his field survey in the Mogao Grottoes area, the Mogao Grottoes, which have been built for more than 1600 years, are facing a series of protection problems such as nail raising, hollowing, crisp alkali and falling off.

In this regard, the General Secretary stressed that "cultural relics protection should be strengthened, not weakened", "efforts should be made to build the Institute into a model of world cultural heritage protection", and "investment should be continuously increased, and advanced technology should be used to strengthen the protection and research of cultural relics".

When the symposium ended, the General Secretary stopped at the door of the conference room again and told everyone: "The protection of the world cultural heritage is the first, and tourism is the second. We should not focus on tickets to pursue economic benefits, and should not be too commercialized."

One month after the inspection, the General Secretary was still concerned about the protection of Dunhuang when awarding Fan Jinshi the national honorary title of "Outstanding Contribution to Cultural Relics Protection". At the award stage in the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People, the General Secretary smiled and shook hands with the "Daughter of Dunhuang", while asking about the recent situation of Dunhuang.

Since the new era, China has established the Dunhuang Cultural Relics Protection and Research Center in Gansu Province, and built the first multi field coupling laboratory in the field of cultural relics protection in China, providing scientific and technological support for cultural heritage protection; A preventive protection monitoring and early warning system has been initially established to ensure the long-term preservation of Mogao Grottoes, murals and painted sculptures; Adopt digital technology to implement digital archives engineering construction for the cave relics of Dunhuang Grottoes, and realize the digital protection of the caves

The staff of the digital protection team of Dunhuang Academy of Cultural Relics walked past a high fidelity reproduction mural.

Today, not only has the protection of Dunhuang cultural heritage achieved remarkable results, but also the "Dunhuang experience with Chinese characteristics" cultural relics protection model represented by Dunhuang Grottoes has basically taken shape, and is gradually moving towards the world.

In recent years, the Dunhuang Research Institute has deeply excavated and displayed Dunhuang art and its research achievements, held "Dunhuang Art Exhibition" and "Digital Dunhuang Exhibition" in more than 10 countries and regions, including the United States, France, Italy, Turkey, etc., and has successively established cooperative relations with universities, museums, and scientific research institutions in Britain, India, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and other countries, Spread Dunhuang culture globally.

"Protecting Mogao Grottoes and inheriting Dunhuang culture are the responsibilities of the Chinese nation for the progress of world civilization."

From sending a congratulatory letter to the first Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo, pointing out that "Dunhuang is an important hub for the cultural convergence of East and West in history", to comparing Dunhuang and other ancient cities to "living fossils" recording the history of the ancient Silk Road at the opening ceremony of the first "Belt and Road" International Cooperation Summit Forum, and to the convening of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China Africa Cooperation, Invite distinguished guests to watch the dance "Flying Rainbow", which reproduces the magnificent art of Dunhuang... Protecting Mogao Grottoes and inheriting Dunhuang culture is not only a vivid portrayal of Xi Jinping's cultural affinity, but also an important epitome of his efforts to promote cultural exchanges and mutual learning.
