If you have Java 8 and are familiar with the command line, you can use java - jar Unciv.jar to run (rather small) JARs in Releases. This is also (currently) the only way to run games on Mac OS.
Please note that the game will generate files in the folder where Jar is located!
If you have also installed JDK 8, you can compile Unciv by yourself, and clone (or pull down) Unciv.jar.
