1、 RJ Interpretation

It is not mentioned separately in the generic generic cabling standard‘ RJ11 connector ’All connectors must be 8-pin. Therefore, the collaboration and compatibility of RJ11 and RJ45 have not yet been documented.

The name RJ represents the registered jack, which is the USOC (Universal Service Ordering Codes) code from Bell System. USOC is a series of registered jacks and their wiring methods, which are developed by Bell System to connect users' equipment to the public network. The FCC regulations govern the application of this purpose. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission), on behalf of the United States government, has issued a document stipulating RJ11.

RJ11 connector is the common name of connector developed by Western ElectricCo. Its shape is defined as a 6-pin connecting device. The original name is WExW. Here, x means "active", contact or needle. For example, WE6W has all six contacts numbered 1 to 6. The WE4W interface only uses the outermost two contacts (1 and 6) of the four pins. WE2W only uses the middle two pins. For RJ11, the information source is contradictory. It can be a 2-core or 4-core 6-pin connector. More confusingly, RJ11 is not only used to represent the 6-pin connector, but also refers to the 4-pin version.

2、 Difference between RJ11 and RJ45

Due to their different sizes (RJ11 is 4-pin or 6-pin, and RJ45 is 8-pin connecting device), it is obvious that RJ45 plug cannot be inserted into RJ11 jack. On the contrary, it is physically feasible (RJ11 plug is smaller than RJ45 jack), which makes people mistakenly think that the two should or can work together. Actually, that's not the case. It is strongly recommended not to use RJ11 plug for RJ45 jack.

Because RJ11 connector is not internationally standardized, its size, insertion force, insertion angle, etc. are not in accordance with international standard connector design requirements, so interoperability cannot be ensured. They even cause damage to both. Since the RJ11 plug is smaller than the RJ45 jack, the plastic parts on both sides of the plug will damage the metal pin of the jack inserted.
