Is a credit card right for me?

When used carefully, it can be super helpful. It can spread the cost of your spending, help you build your credit score and give you extra protection on certain purchases (ICYDK, that's thanks to Section 75).

Remember tho, missing a payment will negatively impact your credit score, which makes it harder to get a loan or other credit in the future. Make sure you’re aware of the dos and don'ts before applying – savvy spending only, OK?

What's a credit score?

It reflects your recent relationship with credit! It factors in any borrowing that you've done but is also affected by things like paying your phone bill on time or being registered to vote. Being savvy with your credit card can improve your credit score over time – but ONLY if you’re making payments on time and staying within your limit. Not doing these things will negatively impact your credit score.

How does a credit card work?

A credit card is a way of borrowing money. You can buy the things you need RN and pay for them later. You must pay back what you owe via monthly payments – you can choose to make the minimum payment, the full balance or something in-between. The quicker you pay off your balance, the less interest you’ll pay. If you pay it off in full each mont h, you won’t pay any interest.

Need-to-know info:

APR (Annual Percentage Rate): A % used to help you understand the cost of borrowing over a year. You can use it to compare costs across different lenders. It includes interest rates and additional charges of a credit offer.

Credit limit: The absolute MAX that you can borrow. You’ll need to pay a fee if you go over. P.S. Staying well below is better to help build your credit score.

Monthly payments: These are how you pay back what you owe. You can pay the minimum payment, the full balance or something in-between.

Direct Debit: This is the easiest way to stay up to date with your payments. Set one up in the Capital One app!

Balance: The amount that you’ve spent. The quicker you pay this off, the less interest you’ll pay.

Section 75: Protects you by making credit card companies jointly responsible with businesses if your purchases aren’t as described or a contract is breached. For example, if something you’ve bought isn’t right, or you haven’t received it. It applies to an item or service costing between £100 and £30,000. Ts&Cs apply.
