Beijing News (reporter Liu Siwei intern Zhang Xinhui) On April 29, Xiaochen, a 12-year-old female student in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, stopped breathing and heartbeat while participating in the sprint project of the school sports meeting, and was diagnosed with brain death after being sent to the hospital. On May 22, a reporter from the Beijing News learned from Xiaochen's father that, considering the significance of continuing treatment is not great, the family voluntarily gave up treatment on May 21 and went through discharge procedures. Xiaochen died at 19:00 that day. The local education department said that the school is communicating with parents to coordinate the matter, and has provided corresponding help to students' families.
Mr. Zhang, Xiaochen's father, told the Beijing News that Xiaochen was a sixth grade student of Yuntai Primary School in Zhengdong New District, Zhengzhou City. On April 29, the school held a sports meeting, and Xiaochen signed up for the 100 meter and 200 meter races. At about 14:40, Xiaochen's mother received a phone call from her teacher and learned that Xiaochen fainted during the competition. When Xiaochen's mother arrived, she saw someone on the scene giving Xiaochen artificial respiration.
According to the emergency medical record of Xiaochen on April 29 provided by Mr. Zhang, Xiaochen was sent to the emergency room at 15:50 and was initially diagnosed as sudden death, cardiac insufficiency, cardiogenic shock, etc.
The diagnosis certificate issued by the hospital shows that Xiaochen was in a deep coma during his hospitalization, without spontaneous breathing, which meets the diagnostic criteria for brain death. After discussion, the family members understood the seriousness of the condition. Considering the high cost of treatment and poor long-term prognosis, after many times of communication about the condition, the family members asked for automatic discharge, voluntarily assumed all the risks and consequences arising therefrom, signed the consent for automatic discharge, and then went through the discharge procedures.
"The child is suffering every day. He can only sustain his life through intubation, and there is no hope. The doctor also advised us four or five times, so it is meaningless for the child to suffer all the time," Mr. Zhang said.
Mr. Zhang believes that the school should bear the liability for compensation for Xiaochen's treatment, and the school has paid 150000 yuan in advance for Xiaochen's medical expenses.
At about 14:00 on May 22, the staff of the Culture, Education and Sports Bureau of Zhengdong New Area told the Beijing News that the school was communicating and coordinating with parents, and the school provided corresponding help for the difficulties raised by parents.
The staff of Yuntai Primary School said that the school is communicating and coordinating with parents, and follow-up matters are still being handled.
