Stroke, also known as stroke, refers to a disease in which the blood supply to the brain is interrupted due to the rupture or blockage of cerebral blood vessels, leading to brain cell damage or even death. In the world, stroke is one of the main causes of death and disability, and its morbidity and mortality are high worldwide.
In China, stroke is one of the first causes of death and the leading cause of disability for Chinese adults.
Napping is a common way of life for Chinese people. It can help restore energy and improve work efficiency in the afternoon. Early studies have shown that frequent naps may be a risk factor for hypertension. However, the relationship between daytime nap time and stroke in hypertensive patients is still unclear.
On June 15, 2024, Peking University 、 Shanxi Medical University Wait for researchers“ European Journal of Neurology "A research paper entitled" Long time snapping: A silent danger for hyper individuals "was published in the journal.
Research shows that for patients with hypertension, siesta cannot exceed 30 minutes, and a long siesta increases the risk of stroke. Compared with a nap of 1-30 minutes, a nap of 31-60 minutes is associated with a 27% increased risk of stroke, and a nap of more than 60 minutes is associated with a 37% increased risk of stroke.

In this study, researchers analyzed a randomized, double-blind clinical study CSPPT In the cohort, 11252 Chinese participants with hypertension were from 32 communities in Jiangsu and Anhui provinces of China, with an average age of 64 years, and had no stroke at baseline. The information on siesta was collected through questionnaires, and the relationship between the duration of siesta and the first stroke of hypertensive patients was analyzed.
Participants were divided into four groups according to the duration of nap: no nap, 1-30 minutes, 31-60 minutes, and more than 60 minutes.
During an average follow-up period of 9.4 years, 1698 people had their first stroke, of which 1494 were ischemic and 204 were hemorrhagic.
The results showed that the duration of siesta was less than 75 minutes, and the duration of siesta was related to the increased risk of stroke. When the duration of siesta exceeded 75 minutes, the risk would not increase further.
Specifically, compared with a nap of 1-30 minutes, a nap of 31-60 minutes is associated with a 27% increase in the risk of stroke, and a nap of more than 60 minutes is associated with a 37% increase in the risk of stroke.
When analyzed by stroke type, 31-60 minutes of siesta is associated with a 31% increased risk of ischemic stroke compared with 1-30 minutes of siesta, and more than 60 minutes of siesta is associated with a 33% increased risk of ischemic stroke. However, no association with hemorrhagic stroke was observed.

Relationship between the duration of siesta and stroke in patients with hypertension
For patients with hypertension who suffer from stroke due to long naps Possible mechanisms , the researchers said:
First, blood pressure may rise again after a nap, which may lead to stroke.
Second, long naps are associated with elevated cortisol levels at night, which can lead to elevated blood pressure and possibly stroke.
Third, long naps are associated with elevated levels of specific inflammatory markers, which in turn can lead to elevated blood pressure, thereby increasing the risk of stroke.
Fourth: A long nap can increase the total sleep time, and a long total sleep time is closely related to stroke.
So, how long is the best nap? Best within 30 minutes!
April 26, 2023, Spain University of Murcia Of researchers in“ Obesity "A research paper entitled" Lifestyle mediators of associations among siesta, objectivity, and metabolic health "was published in the journal.
Research shows that the best nap time is within 30 minutes.

Compared with those who did not take a nap, those who took a nap for more than 30 minutes were associated with a 41% increased risk of high BMI and metabolic syndrome, especially in waist circumference, fasting blood glucose and blood pressure.
In contrast, compared with those who did not take a nap, those who took a nap of less than 30 minutes had no metabolic health risk, performed better in blood pressure, and had a 21% lower risk of hypertension.
April 13, 2023, Spain Universidad de Huelva Of researchers in European Society of Cardiology A study was announced at the annual meeting.
Research shows that the best nap time is 15-30 minutes.
After taking a nap for more than 30 minutes, the risk of arrhythmia increases by 90%, nearly doubling. Compared with those who took a long nap, those who took a nap of less than 15 minutes had a 42% lower risk of atrial fibrillation, and those who took a nap of 15-30 minutes had a 56% lower risk of atrial fibrillation.
