According to the report from www.taiwan.com.cn on June 19, Taiwan's "Central News Agency" reported that Taiwan's defense department said on the 19th that there were 18 PLA military aircraft and 6 PLA warships continuously operating around the Taiwan Strait from 6:00 a.m. on the 18th to 6:00 a.m. on the 19th, of which 12 PLA military aircraft flew over the so-called "middle line of the Taiwan Strait", about 39 nautical miles away from Eluanbi.
In fact, the PLA has flown over this non-existent "Straits Central Line" many times, but for Taiwan, this so-called "Straits Central Line" is particularly important. In fact, this central line was first proposed by the United States with malice because it wanted to "make Taiwan the center". As a result, the Taiwan separatist forces saw that this was an excellent plan for them, so the Taiwan authorities at that time sealed this "central line of the Taiwan Strait" for Taiwan.
Later, the Taiwan island authorities made full use of the "middle line of the strait" to divide the so-called "air defense identification zone", which became the military training base of the Taiwan navy and air force. They thought that this line could directly divide Taiwan Island and the mainland, separating the two sides.
At the beginning, because the mainland's own strength has not yet reached a certain height, coupled with the idea of hoping for peaceful reunification, it has continued to release goodwill in Taiwan and does not want to meet its compatriots. So when the United States proposed the so-called "middle line of the Straits", China did not respond at that time.
However, the mainland's tolerance and goodwill are not an excuse for the United States and Taiwan to unite and advance. After the United States and Taiwan constantly trample on China's red line, the mainland has withdrawn its goodwill, and at the same time, it has grown to a very powerful height. It has the strength to erase the existence of the so-called "middle line of the Straits".
Nonexistent "middle line of the strait"
The junction between Pingtan Island in Fujian Province and Fugui Cape in the northern tip of Taiwan is the northernmost tip of the Taiwan Strait, while its southern tip is at the Erluanbi junction line from Nan'ao Island in Guangdong Province to the southern tip of Taiwan. It can be said that the geographical location of the Taiwan Strait is very special and important, which is also a "maritime corridor" connecting compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
However, Taiwan Island has used this "corridor" as the dividing line between the two sides. Qiu Guozheng, the head of the front desk defense, once said that "if there is no 'middle line of the Taiwan Strait', there is no room for Taiwan Island to buffer". Of course, Qiu Guozheng's words are true from the standpoint of Taiwan's "separatists", but it is not that Taiwan has no buffer space, but that Taiwan's separatist forces have no buffer space.
With the "Straits Central Line", Taiwan Island can not only conduct military training in the so-called "defense area", but also serve as a barrier to isolate the mainland.
However, due to repeatedly challenging the mainland's bottom line, in March 2019, in order to warn the United States and Taiwan of collusion, the PLA sent two J-11 fighter jets to fly over the "Straits Middle Line", which was the first time in more than 20 years. Then on May 10, 2022, an armed helicopter of the People's Liberation Army flew over the so-called "middle line of the Strait" for the first time.
Wu Qian, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense at that time, said, "Taiwan is a part of China. Where does it come from?". Since then, it has been nothing new for PLA warplanes to fly over the "middle line of the Taiwan Straits", and the wishful thinking of Taiwan island splitting branches has also been broken.
In fact, according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and China's territorial and maritime sovereignty, China has absolute jurisdiction and actual control over the Taiwan Strait. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea clearly stipulates that internal water is an integral part of a country's territory. This also means that the relevant waters on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, that is, the territorial sea baseline extends outward, and the sea area, seabed, and air above the sea within 12 nautical miles belong to the national territory.
In addition, sovereign countries also have absolute sovereignty over finance, customs, health management and other aspects in the sea area within 24 nautical miles of the adjacent area. In terms of exclusive economic zones, sovereign countries also have the right to explore and develop natural resources, protect and manage resources within relevant areas, and develop economic activities.
To put it bluntly, the mainland has undoubted sovereignty over the Taiwan Sea. If Taiwan wants to conduct scientific research activities in relevant waters, it must first apply to China. Previously, in order to take into account the attributes of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits and the issues left over by history, the mainland only announced the territorial sea baselines of the mainland, the Xisha Islands and the Diaoyu Islands, which does not affect the mainland's jurisdiction over the territorial sea baselines of the relevant Taiwan Straits.
Therefore, we can draw a conclusion that the so-called "Straits Central Line" set up by Taiwan Island does not exist under the guidance of the United States. It is neither in line with the laws and regulations of the international maritime conventions nor with China's sovereign territorial integrity.
The default "Strait Center Line" disappears in the United States
In fact, since the so-called "middle line of the strait" has never existed, how can it disappear? In fact, the actions of the United States over the years gave the so-called "middle line of the Straits" a sense of existence.
In 1982, at the urging of the United Nations, all countries signed the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and China was one of the first countries to sign it. So far, there are more than 160 countries that have signed the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, but the United States, which claims to be "the first in the world", has been reluctant to sign it. The only reason is that the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea has influenced the United States to implement maritime hegemony.
The United States also knows that what it has done is fundamentally unrelated to the maritime conventions, and it has sailed with impunity in the territorial waters of countries around the world, as if the world was its own home. When China's maritime military strength is not so strong, American warships often cruise in the Taiwan Sea, ignoring China's territorial sovereignty.
What's worse, Taiwan separatists not only did not drive away the capture, but applauded and flattered. It is estimated that the United States is not familiar with licking dogs in such a standard kneeling posture, which is particularly easy to use, and plays an important role in the Taiwan Strait.
However, with the rise of China's military power, the PLA's flight over the so-called "Straits Middle Line" has become a regular training program. One month ago, after Lai Qingde made a statement of "independence" at the inauguration ceremony, the PLA flew military aircraft over the "middle line of the Strait" again, which shocked the Taiwan authorities. So now the so-called "middle line of the Straits" actually only exists in the mouth of the Democratic Progressive Party, the Taiwan authorities.
On this point, all walks of life in Taiwan have seen it clearly, and the Taiwan media have also thoroughly exposed the Democratic Progressive Party's claim of self deception. Taiwan media said that "the United States has tacitly accepted the mainland's practice of 'overthrowing the central line', and there is no central line in the Taiwan Strait".
So the "middle line" that only exists in the mouth of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the Taiwan authorities, looks ridiculous in the face of absolute strength! Moreover, whether there is a central line in the Taiwan Strait or not, only the mainland is qualified to decide. It is not the turn of the United States to give advice. It doesn't matter how the United States determines this!
