In January 1956, Mao Zedong took a train from Shanghai to Nanjing to inspect the Nanjing Military Academy.
On that day, he was on duty peacefully and received the task in advance: check the indoor swimming pool of the college to ensure the safety of the swimming pool. Chairman Mao will come to inspect the college, and will probably visit the swimming pool or even go swimming. Therefore, the college has made all preparations in advance.
Chairman Mao, accompanied by Chen Yi, Tan Zhenlin and other leaders, arrived in Nanjing, and Chairman Liu Bocheng personally greeted him at the station.
After arriving at the military academy, Chairman Mao met the main leading cadres, department heads, professors, etc. of the military academy in the conference room, inquired about the training organization of the military academy in detail, and gave important instructions. He said happily, "The CPC Central Committee sent Comrade Liu Bocheng to be the headmaster of the military academy. I hope that under the leadership of Comrade Liu Bocheng, we can run the military academy better and train the middle and senior cadres of the whole army better."
Later, Mao Zedong inspected the college with great interest.
When he saw a fully equipped indoor swimming pool in the hospital, he was very interested and said, "Let's go swimming."
He said to swim and immediately jumped into the water.
So Mao Zedong swam in the swimming pool for more than an hour. In the water, he looked calm and relaxed, as if walking in the garden. Peace later recalled: "Especially when treading on the water, his whole body stood in the water, his legs were raised and stepped down alternately, his body not only did not sink, but also slowly swam forward; his head was out of the water, his face was smiling, and his expression was very relaxed. ... Although I have long heard that Chairman Mao likes swimming and is good at swimming, I am very happy to see Chairman Mao's skillful and beautiful swimming style, his ruddy face and energetic spirit in the room this time! "
When swimming, Mao Zedong, Liu Shuai and others talked and laughed in the water, which seemed very close.
After coming out of the water, Chairman Mao was not satisfied and said to Liu Shuai:
"Herald, in addition to the general, from general to major, we should learn to swim next year and cross the Yangtze River with me!" (My Encounter with Mao Zedong, page 251)
Chairman Mao wants to lead the whole army, from general to major, to cross the Yangtze River together. What a magnificent scene! What courage and heroism is required!
Chairman Mao's order was ultimately not implemented.
At the end of May that year, he couldn't help coming to Wuhan and swimming along the Yangtze River for the first time.
When Mao Zedong swam, the officers did not come, but when Wuhan citizens saw Chairman Mao swimming in the Yangtze River, they jumped into the Yangtze River and followed Chairman Mao through the wind and waves. It is said that there were no less than 20000 citizens swimming with Mao Zedong in three towns of Wuhan that day.
Mao Zedong set a new record in the history of swimming in the Yangtze River.
