Microsoft has made a lot of bold publicity on the latest Surface laptop equipped with Snapdragon X Elite processor, including that it is 58% faster than Apple's M3 MacBook Air, and its battery life is excellent. Now, the third party has tested these statements, and the results are mostly accurate. It should be noted that the cost of this evaluation is paid by Microsoft.
Ryan Shroud of Signal 65 conducted a series of tests and benchmark tests on Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite SoC to see whether it meets the commitments made by Microsoft when it recently launched the Copilot+PC (including the latest Surface series).
The reviewers compared the new Surface Laptop 7 equipped with Snapdragon X Elite SoC with the old Surface Laptop 5 equipped with Alder Lake Core i7-1255U, Surface Pro 9 equipped with Microsoft SQ3 chip, Prestige 16 AI EVO (Meteor Lake Core Ultra 7 155H) and MacBook Air 15 equipped with M3.
Judging from the heat under load, the latest Surface laptop is indeed hotter than the Surface and MacBook Air equipped with Intel processors, but lower than Prestige. However, Snapdragon X Elite laptops perform better under standard workloads. The MacBook Air performs best in all thermal tests.
Microsoft says the new Surface laptop is incredibly quiet. In the standard workload (Cinebench 2024 single thread) test, the noise of X Elite is 26.3 decibels, which is the quietest of all laptops. Multithreaded testing shows that it is quieter than the MacBook Air and the previous generation Surface.
In the two tests of video playback and Procyon, the battery life of the new Copilot+PC was proved to be excellent. Although MacBook Air did not participate in the Procyon battery test, the battery life of the new Surface Laptop equipped with Snapdragon X Elite is the longest of all systems.
In terms of performance, Snapdragon X Elite is among the best in the multithreaded performance tests of Cinebench and Geekbench, while Apple laptops are slightly better in the single threaded tests of these two benchmark tests.
In the AI test, it is not surprising that Snapdragon X Elite has defeated other machines. In the Procyon AI Computer Vision test, the NPU performance of the chip reached 45 TOPS, twice as fast as that of the SQ3 laptop and MacBook Air, which is the first time.
Other tests include graphics performance. The X Elite is about twice as fast as the other two Surface laptops, but in several 3Dmark tests, the Meteor Lake integrated with Arc Graphics is faster. In the Solar Bay Unlimited and Steel Nomad benchmark tests, the MacBook Air is also faster.
In general, X Elite has performed well in many tests, even outstanding, although some tests are not as earth shaking as Microsoft said. It is worth noting that this evaluation was commissioned by Redmond, so the independent evaluation may yield more accurate results.
