Reported on May 22 by www.cnews.comAccording to RIA Novosti on May 21, the Russian Ministry of Defense proposed to update the border coordinates of the Baltic Sea area, and the Russian legal information website released the draft regulations. At present, this draft is in the preparation stage and is expected to enter into force in January 2025.
The Russian Ministry of Defense pointed out that during the implementation of the regulations, there will be a "direct baseline system at the southern end of the Russian island" that was previously missing in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland and near Baltisk, Kaliningrad, so that the corresponding sea areas can be used as internal water. At the same time, the maritime boundary will also be modified.
It is reported that in order to ensure the safety of navigation, Russia will revise and republish the national nautical charts of corresponding scales.
The report pointed out that the legislation document to be adopted would invalidate the resolution on approving the list of geographical coordinates of points adopted by the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union on January 15, 1985.These points are used to determine the baseline position, so as to calculate the width of the territorial sea, exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean, the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea coast and around the islands.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stressed that Russia's direct baseline in the Gulf of Finland has not been extended at present, nor has it formed a closed loop with its territory, leading to the uncertainty of the external boundary of Russia's internal sea.
In addition, the explanation attached to the document mentioned that the geographical coordinates of these points were determined on the basis of small scale nautical charts drawn in the middle of the 20th century based on data materials, which is not completely consistent with the "current geographical environment".(Compiled by Tong Shiqun)
