Ke Qingshi was an old revolutionary who joined the Party in 1922. After the founding of New China, he served as the first secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and the first secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee (equivalent to today's Shanghai Municipal Party Committee), and he has long dominated Shanghai. Objectively speaking, when he was in charge of Shanghai, Ke Qingshi also made certain contributions to the construction and development of Shanghai. In particular, he pioneered the saying that "the whole country plays a chess game", which also played an important role in guiding the economic development of the country at that time.

Ke Qingshi's work has both achievements and mistakes. For example, during the Lushan Conference in 1959, as the leader of the East China Group, he constantly criticized Zhang Wentian for his correct speech and was responsible for the follow-up of the "Great Leap Forward". In 1965, Ke Qingshi was elected as Vice Premier, but his health was not good at that time. It was also the same year that Ke Qingshi died of illness at the age of 63.
Ke Qingshi's wife was named Yu Wenlan. In 1948, Ke Qingshi married Yu Wenlan in Shijiazhuang. Yu Wenlan was also an old revolutionary. During the Anti Japanese War, he participated in the revolution in Yan'an. After the victory of the war, he left Yan'an to study at the North China United University in the Shanxi Chahar Hebei border area. He was a rare senior intellectual in that era.

In college, Yu Wenlan mainly studied land reform and rural teaching, preparing for the future construction of New China. At the end of 1947, after the liberation of Shijiazhuang, Yu Wenlan was assigned to work in Shijiazhuang, entered the policy research room, gave full play to what he had learned, and participated in the land reform work of the eight districts of Shijiazhuang.
Yu Wenlan married Ke Qingshi while working in Shijiazhuang. It was 1948, and Ke Qingshi was the mayor of Shijiazhuang. The two also came together because of their common revolutionary ideals. After marriage, Ke Qingshi and Yu Wenlan raised four children, three women and one son.

After the founding of New China, Yu Wenlan has been working with her husband's workplace. Ke Qingshi was very strict with his wife and refused to promote Yu Wenlan for many times, which also led to Yu Wenlan's early participation in the revolution but not high level. It is worth mentioning that in terms of personal life, Ke Qingshi is strict with himself. No matter his wife or children, he never engages in specialization and his life is very simple.
After the death of Ke Qingshi in 1965, Yu Wenlan has been living in the Kangping Road Family Home in Shanghai, living a simple life. The price was not high at that time, and Yu Wenlan's salary was no problem to maintain the family's life. But after the downfall of the Gang of Four, especially around the 1980s, with the rise of price, coupled with the low level of Yu Wenlan, her life was at a tight end.

For this reason, Yu Wenlan wrote letters to the Central Committee many times, reflecting the difficulties in life. For example, on June 12, 1980, Deng Gong replied to Yu Wenlan's letter: "Please consult with Comrade Peng Chong in the General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China." Peng Chong once worked with the East China Bureau in Shanghai and worked with Ke Qingshi, so Deng Gong replied to Peng Chong's handling of this matter.
In 1983, Yu Wenlan wrote a letter to the Central Committee again, which mainly reflected the "inconveniences" of Shanghai life. This "inconvenience" is mainly accompanied by the query of Ke Qingshi's evaluation, and Yu Wenlan's life in Kangping Road has also been affected. Yaobang replied to Wenlan's letter and instructed Yu Wenlan to move to Beijing. In December, Yu Wenlan moved to Beijing to live. At the same time, the Bureau of Retired Cadres of the Central Committee Office of the Communist Party of China also adjusted Yu Wenlan's treatment.

In 1985, Yu Wenlan wrote a letter to the Central Committee again to reflect her difficulties in life. On July 2, Deng Gong replied to Yu Wenlan's letter again: "The General Office of the Central Committee is requested to take appropriate measures, and if there are difficulties, they can be properly solved." After that, Yu Wenlan's life and medical treatment have also been improved, and in her later years, she lived a life of recuperation.
