The discovery of ancient tombs on the South Campus of CUHK has a precedent

On December 13, news spread from a construction site on the south campus of Sun Yat sen University's Guangzhou campus that an ancient tomb was suspected to have been excavated at the construction site. Li Xin (a pseudonym), a student of Sun Yat sen University, provided news to the reporter of the Times Weekly that the ancient tombs excavated on the south campus of Zhongda University were suspected to be Tang tombs. There were three tombs in total, but the exact time period of the ancient tombs was still unknown. As early as the 1980s, Sun Yat sen University had discovered an ancient tomb of the Western Han Dynasty and the Eastern Han Dynasty. According to the live video provided by a student of Sun Yat sen University to the reporter of the Times Weekly, a ditch has been dug in the relevant section, with a depth of more than 1.6 meters through visual inspection. The cordon has been drawn up at the scene, and the teachers and students of the Archaeology Department of the School of Sociology and Anthropology of Sun Yat sen University are carrying tools to investigate the scene and make surveying and mapping records.
According to the on-site report of DV of Guangdong TV Station, students from CUHK reported that the construction scope is only a ditch and will not continue to expand. The preliminary observation is a brick chamber tomb with vertical holes and earth pits. The school has reported the matter to the Guangzhou Cultural Relics Department, and will implement protective backfilling after clearing records and surveying and mapping.
"Archaeologists will not dig the tomb on their own initiative, which is also a respect for the tomb and its owner." An informed student of Sun Yat sen University said that unless it has been damaged or affected by construction, it will normally keep the tomb in its original state.
This is not the first time that Sun Yat sen University has found an ancient tomb.
As early as 1961, the Archaeological Teaching and Research Group of CUHK found a Western Han Dynasty tomb on campus. In November of the same year, another brick tomb of the Eastern Han Dynasty was excavated at the original Gaogang Stadium in the campus. In 1981, another Eastern Han tomb was found at the infrastructure construction site of the audio-visual education building in the southeast area of Sun Yat sen University.

In 2003, the campus of South China Normal University University Town excavated two more tombs, namely the Kangling Tomb of Liu Yan, the ancestor of the Southern Han Dynasty, and the Deling Tomb of Liu Yin, the martyr of the Southern Han Dynasty, during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period. It has been more than 1000 years since then and is known as the "Two Tombs of the Southern Han Dynasty".
