NBA is the abbreviation of the National Basketball Association (the National Basketball Association). It was founded on June 6, 1946. When it was founded, it was called the BAA, the Basketball Association of America. It was jointly founded by the owners of eleven ice hockey stadiums and stadiums in order to prevent the stadiums from being idle outside the ice hockey game. When BAA was founded, there were 11 teams in total: New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Washington Congress, Chicago Bucks, Cleveland Rebels, Detroit Falcons, Philadelphia Samurai, Pittsburgh Ironmen, Providence Steam, St. Louis Bombers and Toronto Eskimos.
In 1949, BAA annexed another league (NBL) and renamed it NBA. In the 1949-50 season, There are 17 teams in the NBA. In 1976, the NBA annexed the American Basketball Association (ABA), and the number of teams increased to 22. In 1980, the Dallas Mavericks (microblog data) team joined the NBA. In 1988, the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat joined the NBA. In 1990, Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves joined the NBA. In 1995, two Canadian teams joined the NBA, the Toronto Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies, bringing the number of NBA teams to 29. In 2004, the Charlotte Bobcats joined the NBA, bringing the total number of teams to 30.
