Joanna Wang Ruolin's new album Hotel La Rut Ragged Hotel is like a collection of colorful fairy tales and comics. The concept of the album is inspired by one of her favorite Canadian comedies The Kids in the Hall, which is an extension of the short play Hotel La Rut. This song is like a window into the ragged hotel world, where 23 different tenants live, These tenants are all characters invited by Joanna, including girls who fall in love with murderers, flies, lonely people, sea pirates, and strange animals. All unexpected characters live in the Hotel La Rut Ragged Hotel. Joanna brought the inner world of these characters and their ideas to the table through songs, and shared them with everyone through music, Joanna thinks that these characters may encounter heartbreaking and cruel things in real life, but in their own minds, the fantasy world is actually beautiful, full of hope, and even win in the unrealistic, Joanna also hopes that through this album, she can let everyone hear the contrast she has always liked: the humor and beauty of mixing shortcomings and advantages, which seems contradictory but worth pondering.
The whole album has been prepared for two years. Joanna wrote and composed 23 songs in person, and Adam Lee, the recorder and mixer of the last award-winning album "Call of Love", was invited to produce them. Joanna specially flew to Akureyri in the north of Iceland in 2022 for this album to live for six weeks. At that time, Chris Funk, the producer of the album "Call of Love", helped a boss who opened a holiday home in Iceland and loved music wonderfully to run a recording studio, and told Joanna about this opportunity. It was during the epidemic period, Joanna missed the feeling of leaving so much that she soon made up her mind to promise to record an album in Iceland. The music and arrangement of the whole album are designed according to the feeling and story of each song, so the overall musicality does not belong to the same style, and is very diverse. From Indie Rock and Prog Rock to the new wave music, retro music and music style inspiration from the Beatles in the 1980s, the graininess of the whole album presents different personalities of 23 tenants. In the process of recording the album, Joanna and the team will explore the arrangement together. Joanna said that the arrangement process is very interesting. Even if there is no feedback, if you continue to edit, you will arrive at a bright place. You will suddenly find inspiration, and you can start the next song.
Joanna described her time in Iceland as a summer camp. She lived in the same room with the album music team. Every morning, Joanna and her team would drive together for ten minutes to record two or three songs in the studio. Sometimes the sound engineer will sleep directly in the studio, because he is the kind of person who is crazy and cannot leave the studio! Outside the studio is the sea, and there will also be sheep with dull expressions. There will also be Horse Ranch nearby. In the studio, you will see the trainer taking the horse for a walk nearby. Not only can you interact with the horse, Joanna is lucky to ride the horse to Iceland! Joanna also shared that Iceland's scenery is quite vast and desolate, which is very shocking! It was April to May at that time. It was the transition period between winter and spring. It often snowed heavily for a few days, but it was a scene of blue sky and green land. The weather was dreamily polarized, which made Joanna have a very happy summer camp.
The album cover of Hotel La Rut Ragged Hotel was painted by Joanna's sister Tina. The two have a lot of popular culture in common. After discussion, her sister can immediately capture the cover feeling Joanna wants, which is full of tacit understanding! Joanna thinks her sister is very powerful and sharp, as if they can feel each other's flow and emotions! On the cover, Tina is influenced by the cartoonist Yixiong Tu, who depicts the spiritual figures who string the whole album. She wanders in the humorous, scary and absurd world, but feels the role of ecstasy, clumsiness and fearlessness.
