Gutian Linshui Palace
Incense fire connects both sides
Gutian Linshui Palace is located in Zhongcun Village, Daqiao Town, Gutian County, Ningde City, Fujian Province. It is a unique, simple and elegant building imitating the Tang Palace.This is the ancestral temple of Chen Jinggu, the wife of Linshui, the "Goddess of Heaven". It is a national key cultural relics protection unit. Every year, hundreds of thousands of believers come to worship and ask for incense.
Liu Zhen, a staff member of Gutian Linshui Palace Management Committee, explained to us.According to Liu Zhen, the Gutian Linshui Palace was first built in the eighth year of the Zhenyuan era of the Tang Dynasty (AD 792). After being rebuilt and expanded in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, the magnificent palace and temple today is not only a whole, but also a combination of buildings in various times.
As a palace like building, the architectural pattern of Gutian Linshui Palace attaches great importance to taking the central axis as the benchmark, balancing the left and right sides, and forming a layered and deep architectural space.On the central axis, the stage, the bell and drum tower, the worship pavilion, the main hall, the back hall and other core buildings are raised from south to north, according to the mountains.The side halls, side halls and other buildings on both sides of the central axis stretch symmetrically from left to right.Standing at the foot of the mountain, looking from afar, the blue sky and the red walls, black tiles and blue stones of the Linshui Temple set off each other, which is simple and elegant.

After passing through the mountain gate and climbing up the stairs, the first one came to the Yi Gate, which is located in the southeast of the main hall.In Liu Zhen's opinion, the Yimen Gate, which was built in the Ming Dynasty, is a fine work of art in itself. After more than 500 years of wind and rain, it is still shining.
The Yimen Gate of Linshui Palace is shaped like a memorial archway, which is symmetrical from left to right. Above the blue stone framed gate, two clay sculptures and green dragons are clustered together with a rectangular vertical painted plaque, which is inscribed with five regular script gold plated characters, "Grant Linshui Palace", showing the extraordinary status of Gutian Linshui Palace.There is a fairy on the left and right, one holding a peerless cup and the other holding an official hat, which means "heavenly blessing and promotion".
Then look at the clay sculpture on the top of the main gate - the elephant carrying a camel and a halberd vase, which means "good luck and peace in the world".And the stone couplets on both sides of the main gate, "The temple looks strong and new for thousands of years, and the mother instrument shows a hundred generations of thick and boundless earth", summarize the people's endless admiration for Chen Jinggu.

Through the Yimen Gate and up the stone steps, you can see the core buildings on the central axis of Gutian Linshui Palace.First came the ancient stage.The ancient stage is located in front of the main hall, which is the essence of the building of Linshui Palace and the masterpiece of the whole palace.
The ancient stage stands on a half meter high platform, with four upright columns and three transparent sides. Wood carving art can be seen everywhere.These wood carvings are all over the beams, columns, caissons, cornices and the skirts of the stage base. They are lifelike and exquisite, and can be called a masterpiece.There are 13 wood carvings under the stage, including six flowers and seven figures. The original is now in the Fujian Provincial Museum.
As one of the four best protected ancient stages in China so far, the ancient stage of Linshui Palace has been included in the list of boutique stages in the History of Chinese Drama, and it still shines through the vicissitudes.
main hall
On the opposite side of the stage is the main hall, also known as the main hall, which is dedicated to the "three ladies" statue of Linshui Lady Chen Jinggu and her sisters Lin Jiuniang and Li Sanniang.
The solemn and elegant main hall, five rooms wide and six rooms deep, with single eaves and two sloping roofs, is a hybrid structure of lifting beams and wearing buckets.
The upper, lower, inner and outer layers of the shrine are stacked, and the decorative technique of relief and openwork is used to show the ancient palace design, which looks elegant and dignified.
In the middle of the shrine is the real statue of Lady Linshui, Chen Jinggu, wearing a pearl crown and a golden robe. She is kind and serene.
In ancient times, women's production conditions were not good, and the birth of children was called the gate of death.Since the era when medicine was not developed enough, Chen Jinggu has been known as the "God of Women and Children Protection" who "saves the birth, protects the fetus and protects the people".
Refurbishment
The continuous flow of incense has ushered in the two major renovations of Gutian Linshui Palace Ancestral Temple in history.
The first time was in the seventh to eighth year of the Zhizheng era of the Yuan Dynasty (1347-1348). This overhaul was recorded in detail in the Records of Shunyi Temple in Linshui written by Zhang Yining, a famous official in Gutian at the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty.
The second time was in the second year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty.In the first year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1875), the Linshui Palace was caught in fire and the historic sites in the temple were damaged.The reconstruction started in the second year of Guangxu and was completed in the twelfth year of Guangxu (1887), lasting ten years.This renovation has determined the layout and scale of the current Gutian Linshui Palace Ancestral Temple.
Communication
For thousands of years, Gutian Linshui Palace has become a holy place for many believers to worship. Believers regard pilgrimage to the ancestral temple as their greatest wish in life.The millennium incense in Gutian Linshui Palace connects the feelings of people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. At present, every year, dozens or even hundreds of Taiwan pilgrimage groups come to ask for incense. Every year, more than 10000 Taiwan believers come to worship.
In order to better protect this ancient building, in 2007, the local government invited incense from the main hall of the Ancestral Temple of Linshui Palace, and built a new incense hall nearby. Open fire no longer enters the main hall.
Since 2008, the CPC Ningde Municipal Committee and the CPC Gutian County Committee and the CPC Gutian County Government have invested a lot of money in the comprehensive repair and protection of the Linshui Palace, and have also built the Chen Jinggu Cultural Park, which covers an area of 3000 mu, with a total investment of 300 million yuan and integrates believers' worship and vacation.
In recent years, Gutian County has also held several consecutive Chen Jinggu Culture (Tourism) Festivals in Gutian Linshui Palace by virtue of the platform of the Straits Forum, which has become a spiritual bond connecting the profound friendship between compatriots on both sides of the Straits and an important bridge to promote cultural and economic exchanges and cooperation between the two sides of the Straits.
