According to the report on the website of today's Russian TV station on May 13, German government spokesman Stefan Haberstreet said at a press conference held on the 13th that Berlin opposed any proposal aimed at establishing a no fly zone over Ukrainian territory controlled by NATO forces.

Earlier, some members of the German Bundestag put forward the idea of setting up a no fly zone in Ukraine. Parliamentarians from some opposition parties and the three party ruling coalition said on the 11th that they supported the use of defense systems deployed in Poland and Romania to help Ukraine defend against Russian missiles and UAVs. They also advocated the establishment of a 70 km wide security zone on the border between Ukraine and the EU.

According to the report, when asked about the German government's views on this proposal, Haebelstright said that Prime Minister Schultz's cabinet had opposed this idea in the past and now also opposed it.

He said, "We think this is a cross-border behavior, which means that (NATO) is directly involved in the ongoing conflict between Kiev and Moscow.".

The report also said that Haebelstright said that the western supporters of Kiev should focus on providing air defense systems to them. Berlin recently promised to provide Ukraine with "Patriot" air defense systems.

He said that Germany had "invested heavily in helping Ukraine's air defense". He pointed out that Germany had provided Kiev with German made air defense systems and self-propelled anti-aircraft guns. (Compiled by/Guo Jun)
