Description

Quite often I will search for things and the handbooks or make space seem to come up farther down the list that popular websites, hosting companies, etc.

I was curious if there is a SEO plugin installed on the various handbook websites, and if so, has a search engine optimization audit been performed on all of the content to make sure it has the best opportunity to show up as the top resource for information on various topics.

##Sample search terms
"organizing a WordPress event"

pulls up a plugin.

Better SEO org-wide

How can we make the page direct to resources for becoming an organizer and hosting your first local WordPress event?

More importantly, as WordPress continues to grow and become more usable, I feel it's very important to keep SEO at top-of-mind when creating any and all content.

Discussion points:

  • Existing WordPress content - are the Titles, Excerpts, and Short Descriptions for each post optimized
  • Future WordPress content - establishing a best practice for SEO, provide information for how to use any installed SEO plugins across the websites
  • Ensure SEO plugins are installed on each of the sites ( *)

Trac is really not for discussions like this, and there's no specific outcomes proposed in the ticket.

To answer the questions:

I was curious if there is a SEO plugin installed on the various handbook websites,

Yes and no. We rely upon WordPress's core functionalities as much as possible, we do however have Jetpack SEO toosl enabled, and have code to optimise the defaults for various things. We don't have any UI functionalities other than what core allows for, intentionally.

WordPress.org is a WordPress site; and we try to showcase WordPress as software as much as possible; it doesn't require additional plugins usually .

Existing WordPress content - are the Titles, Excerpts, and Short Descriptions for each post optimized

The metadata is exposed, it's up to the handbook authors to create proper content.

Future WordPress content - establishing a best practice for SEO

This comes back to writing again, those who author content need to write content appropriate for search and actually be useful.
