The Plugin Directory gets a refresh

Over the past few weeks, the Meta Meta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. team has been working on a new theme for the Plugin Directory . This visual refresh is part of the continued effort to establish a consistent design language across WordPress.org WordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ . The updated site launched today. Congratulations to everyone involved in this effort.

The update’s primary focus was to standardize the site’s layout, fonts, spacing, and colors with other newly updated sections of WordPress.org. This follows the recent Pattern Directory refresh and the Forums refresh launched a few weeks prior.

Here’s a look at the new homepage , followed by a single plugin page.

The updated single plugin Plugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party layout versus the current site.

Next steps

The Plugin Directory refresh is now live for WordPress.org and all foreign-language sites (Rosetta sites). Some translation work may need to be done for each locale, and that can be managed in the WordPress Plugin Directory project.

It’s important to note that this refresh is not a complete redesign. Over the years, there have been many discussions throughout the community on how the Plugin Directory could be improved—everything from a completely different homepage layout and more data for plugin authors to better search and plugin categorization. The aesthetic updates completed in this iteration do not fundamentally change the Plugin Directory, but they do set the stage for future, more c onsequential improvements.

Minor iterations and follow-ups are planned in the next few weeks as the community begins using the directory and any new issues are created. There are also a few accessibility issues that will be addressed post-launch, and I wanted to highlight the following open discussions:

If you find an issue or have suggestions for larger functional changes, please add an item to the WordPress.org issues queue on GitHub GitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be revi ewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ or in Meta Trac .

I like to share some insight, is there any chance to adjust the search bar placement?
- IMO, it would be better if we place it on the right side of the page, here is my mockup .
- And, the search results number on the right side of the search form always shows a fixed number of 1,020 plugins if search any term. I think it should be a dynamic search results number.

  I believe this is the max number of plugins the query returns for a broad search. @ dufresnesteven can you confirm? If you search for something more niche, like “apple”, the number of returned results is less than 1020.

  A fix has been implemented to display the actual number of plugins found from a search. Pagination is still restricted to 50 pages.

    That is correct. We don’t allow paging beyond a thousand results.

I have to say the header Header The header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and feel of your website. It can influence a visitor’s opinion about your content and you/ your organization’s brand. It may also look different on different screen sizes. , on mobile specifically, when you’re logged in, does not make any sense.

Your avatar Avatar An avatar is an image or illustration that specifically refers to a character that represents an online user. It’s usually a square box that appears next to the user’s name. is in a top bar on its own, right aligned. Underneath that, but not aligned, a hamburger menu icon, but not really, it’s an equals sign 🟰 ? A search icon to the left when search also shows up right beneath the header, and then a WordPress logo left aligned in the header, but not in the top left where you’d expect it, but one row below…

The most relevant is #240 and #604 aims to cleanup some alignment issues.

Overall refresh looks good. Nice and clean.

Two things stand out to me though.
1) we really need to restore the lightbox on the slideshow. Still miss it every time I try to look at slideshow images. I don’t understand why that never got added back in. 2) those red stars look all kinds of wrong to me.

  Thanks for sharing @ jb510 . I did not know about the lightbox functionality being removed back in 2016. The scope of this refresh was quite narrow, but there are definitely a lot of functional improvements that could be made in future iterations.

The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility ) . That said, there is an open issue on the color change , and there is a great discussion in the comments. If you have time, I encourage you to share your thoughts there. 🙏

I’m not sure if this is correct place to share this feedback, feel free to move post. I like tagging plugs as favorites, but have never been able to then use the favorites list to find what i’m looking for without having to scroll through manually page by page to find what i’m looking for , so I tend not to use the favorites page and just s earch for what i’m looking for. I’d like to suggest adding some filtering and ordering functions to the tables that store a users favorites list, this would be a great way to self manage plugin Plugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. There are some short coming on navigations js, page scrolling back to top, no ability to uncheck favorites from My favorites page, etc.
